Irish darts player Willie O’Connor has labelled the seeding system at the World Cup of Darts ‘ridiculous’.
O’Connor has hit out at the rule giving the top four seeds a bye into the second round.
Meanwhile, the remaining 12 seeds must come through the group stage, with the seeds determined by each pair’s cumulative PDC world ranking.
O’Connor and Mickey Mansell form the Republic of Ireland’s team at this year’s tournament, which began on Thursday.
After beating Singapore 4-1 in their opening match, the eighth seeds will face Gibraltar in their final group stage fixture.
Gibraltar are taking part after replacing Uganda on the eve of the tournament with the pair from the African nation being denied visas into host nation Germany.
Another win for Ireland would see them join England, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland and Scotland in the second round.
O’Connor slams World Cup rule
However, O’Connor has called for the byes to be scrapped in a furious rant during his post-match press conference.
The world No.36 told reporters: “It’s a good job that those boys that are seeded into the second round are in that second round because I don’t think four would come through.
“Put those boys in the same round as us. I think everyone in the World Cup should be in the same draw. If it’s the World Cup every single person in the world should be in the same draw.
“First round. It’s either a World Cup or it’s not. It’s ridiculous, second round at the World Cup. I don’t agree with that.
“I think that’s absolute… rubbish. I think it’s absolutely rubbish. You wouldn’t see it in any other sport and I don’t think it should be in darts.
“Just because it’s first to four [they] get those boys into the next round. Put those boys into the same round as us, see how they do under pressure because we’re under serious pressure here today.”
Who are the World Cup seeds?
England and Scotland were both knocked out in the second round after receiving byes last year.
Meanwhile, the Netherlands were the only one of this year’s seeds to not be amongst the top four in 2025.
Danny Noppert and Gian van Veen won both of their group stage matches 4-0 on their way to reaching the semi-finals.
As for Northern Ireland, they are the defending champions having beaten Wales in last year’s final.
The 12 group winners will be drawn into the knockout stage bracket at random, with the top four seeds kept apart until the semi-finals.
O’Connor is making his 16th straight appearance at the World Cup of Darts this year.
The 39-year-old is one of only two players to have featured at every edition of the tournament alongside Austria’s Mensur Suljovic.
Simon Whitlock had previously held the distinction as well but is not part of the Australia team this year.
O’Connor’s best performance with Ireland came in 2019 as he and Steve Lennon were beaten in the final by Scotland.
