England boss Thomas Tuchel confirmed there was ‘a bit of a mix-up’ over who was meant to take the penalty against Costa Rica.
England, who ran out 3-0 winners in Orlando, were awarded a spot kick after Eberechi Eze’s strike from just inside the area smacked the arm of a Costa Rican player.
With regular penalty taker Harry Kane off the pitch having been substituted in the 63rd minute following a 9/10 performance in the eyes of Adrian Durham, there was some confusion as to who would step up.
In the end, it was Anthony Gordon who took the penalty and he made no mistake from the spot, firing his effort into the upper left corner.
Tuchel explains penalty situation
Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT after the match, Tuchel explained how the substitution of Kane, which was one of six in the 63rd minute, sparked confusion on the penalty-taking order.
“We’re not so sure before, like, if we get a penalty, who would be on the pitch,” Tuchel said.
“It was a bit of a mix-up because of all the substitutions.
“We should have put it in writing on the walls. It was our mistake, we didn’t do it so we needed clarification on the pitch.
“But Anthony was the second taker on the sheet and he scored.”
Gordon was joined on the scoresheet by Declan Rice and Ollie Watkins.
The newly-minted Barcelona winger was the architect for Rice’s opener in the ninth minute as he skipped past his marker on the left and drove into the box.
Gordon then cut the ball back for Rice, who swept it home with a tidy left-footed finish.
Watkins completed the rout in the 87th minute with a close-range header after Costa Rican gloveman Abraham Madriz parried Morgan Rogers’ long-range effort.
England will round out their World Cup preparations with a behind-closed-doors match against amateur outfit Miami United.
England’s win over Costa Rica ‘exactly what we wished for’
But for Tuchel, the win over Costa Rica had him feeling good about where his side is at ahead of their World Cup opener against Croatia on June 17.
“Very good match today,” Tuchel said.
“Very good energy and intensity on the highest level, counter-pressing on the highest level.
“On the ball, off the ball, a very good team performance from everyone, from the guys who started and the guys who finished the match.
“It was exactly what we wished for and it was the next step that we wanted.”
