Arsenal stand on the brink of history. The biggest club in Europe to have never won the Champions League is potentially 90 minutes away from getting that monkey off its back. 

Arsenal have already ended one drought this month, winning their first Premier League title since 2004. After three consecutive runners-up finishes, there was an outpouring of both joy and relief among the fan base when Arsenal became uncatchable in top spot.

The celebrations might be even wilder if Arsenal can become kings of the continent for the first time. Hitherto their only appearance in the final came in 2006, when Arsene Wenger’s side lost 2-1 to Barcelona. It remains a painful memory for supporters of the North London outfit.

It is hard to argue that Arsenal do not deserve to be here. Some may point to a relatively kind draw in the knockout phase, which has seen the Gunners face Bayer Leverkusen, Sporting CP and an Atletico Madrid side that has just finished a distant fourth in La Liga.

But Arsenal finished top of the league phase with a 100 percent record, scoring the most goals and conceding the fewest. You do not get more dominant than that.

Paris Saint-Germain stand in Arsenal’s way. They were not so impressive in the league phase, but just as they did on their way to glory last term, PSG came on strong when it mattered most.

None of Chelsea, Liverpool nor Bayern Munich was a match for the Parisians over two legs. A brilliant Bayern team pushed them close, but Luis Enrique’s side got the job done.

This has the makings of a classic Champions League final between an irresistible force in PSG and an immovable object in Arsenal.

PSG start as favourites

It is hard to imagine Arsenal outscoring PSG in a goal-laden encounter, so to win this Champions League final they will need to be solid at the back.

That is the principal strength of Mikel Arteta’s team, but even Arsenal’s rearguard will be severely tested by this magnificent PSG attack.

Bear in mind, too, that the Parisians will not be as fatigued as Arsenal. They have played only 34 league games this term, compared to 38 for the Gunners. Needless to say, the Premier League is more taxing than Ligue 1.

Arsenal have had a wonderful season no matter what happens this weekend. Unfortunately for the Premier League champions, their wait for the biggest prize in European football is set to go on.

Goals at both ends?

PSG blew Inter away in last year’s Champions League final, winning 5-0 in Munich. We anticipate a much more even encounter this time around.

Arsenal are a better team than Inter and they showed in last season’s semi-finals that they can match PSG. Although the Gunners lost both legs of that tie, they held their own at home and away.

Arsenal’s defenders will be put through their paces on Saturday, but Arteta’s men will ask questions of PSG at the other end too.

Arsenal have scored in eight consecutive matches in all competitions, while they have drawn a blank in just one of their last 15 Champions League fixtures.

Kvaratskhelia to seize moment

It is hard to single out one player from this superb PSG team, but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has really shone in this year’s Champions League.

The Georgia international has had a direct hand in 10 goals in the knockout stage, more than any other player.

Seven of those 10 have been scored by the winger himself, including a brace against Bayern Munich in the semis.

Kvaratskhelia has had a sensational season, but he is not finished yet. If anyone can emerge as the star of Saturday’s showdown, it is him.
