While most of the United States is riddled with World Cup fever, most of those in New York have also come down with a case of Knicks fever.
The New York Knicks ended their 53-year drought of an NBA championship after defeating Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the Finals.
Jalen Brunson. Karl-Anthony Towns. OG Anunoby. Mikal Bridges. Josh Hart.
All champions. All heroes. All newly anointed as kings of New York.
All epitomize what it means to wear the orange and blue jersey with the inscription of ‘New York’ branded across their chests.
For Jose Alvarado, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, this is more than a homecoming. The city is his.
New York is known as the city that never sleeps, but that has never been more factually accurate than when the final buzzer sounded in San Antonio on June 13.
New Yorkers flooded the streets of their five boroughs throughout the entirety of the 2025-26 playoffs, but now they are all in the midst of coming together in Manhattan for the championship parade.
The numbers expected to be in attendance are unprecedented.
And, with the parade not due to begin for another few hours yet, Knicks fans are not waiting around, having began to flood the streets from as early as 4am.
Some even camped out overnight to ensure they secured prime viewing positions for when the bus of their basketball heroes parades the city.
Others have even tried to make a few bucks by advertising that, for money, they will save spots for people of which one person has put up an ad on AirTasker for $750.
But one thing that is for certain is the city is rocking like never before.
For 600 lucky Knicks fans, though, they will get to see their beloved team up close after New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that they were conducting a public lottery for free tickets to the Championship Ceremony at City Hall following the ticker-tape parade.
“From packed watch parties in our parks to joyous celebrations that spilled out onto our streets, this championship belongs to New York City,” Mamdani said.
“The Knicks brought together New Yorkers from every borough and every walk of life. That’s why we’re making these tickets free and accessible — so working-class people have a chance to be part of this historic moment and celebrate the team that brought a championship home.”
Mayor Mamdani became inextricably linked to the Knicks’ championship run after one fan’s catchphrase about his team became a viral meme, in which he said: “My Mayor Muslim, My Bagels Jewish, My Christian Dior, Knicks in Four.”
Of course, he had to amend the ending slightly when the Knicks lost Game 3 at home – with President Donald Trump in attendance – but nonetheless, it was something that will go down in Knicks lore for years to come.
The championship parade officially gets underway at 10am ET with the team starting from near Bowling Green in Lower Manhattan, where they will travel North along Broadway before finishing at City Hall.
