Jesse Marsch has revealed that the Canada bench heard Ismael Kone’s leg snap during his gruesome injury against Qatar.
The midfielder went down with an injury early on in the second half of their emphatic 6-0 victory after a challenge for the ball.

The former Leeds United boss recalled the incident in his post-match press conference, and said: “I haven’t spoken to Ismael yet, but he’s at the hospital. He will prepare for surgery.
“I’m going to see him after this press conference, we’ll see exactly what we decide to do for him. His family is with him at the hospital, his mother’s there.
“It happened right in front of the bench, we could all hear it. I knew right away, it was similar to when Tajon (Buchanan) got hurt in training, it was right in front of us and everyone could hear the bone snap.
“Your heart goes out to him and everybody’s a little shaken by the whole experience, because of the nature of the injury and also because Ismael is a big part of the heart of our team. It will be a big loss for us, he’s been an amazing player in these last two games.
“But look, you also saw that he was waving to the crowd and almost making everybody else feel at ease with the fact that he’s injured. It’s an incredible statement about Ismael as a person, but this is our team.
“I’ve been trying to tell people for two years about the special character of this group, and it gets highlighted in challenging moments and moments of glory.
“I think that today was a representation of all of that, and you got to see how the team… everybody was crushed when it happened, but we had to find a way to stay focused, we knew that Ismael wanted us to finish the job.
“So, there’s a lot of thoughts that go through our heads right now, we’re all thinking about him, but we’re all very proud of what we are.
“That’s what I’d say more than anything, we’re very proud of who we are and what we are, and I think that was all showcased today.”
Pain and joy for Canada
Victory in Vancouver was historic for Canada, who won their first ever World Cup match in their third tournament appearance.
Jonathan David scored a hat-trick alongside goals from Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba, who held up Kone’s shirt when celebrating.
A Mohammed Manai own-goal also added to the scoreline against a Qatar side that finished the match with nine men.
Canada are top of Group B and ahead of Switzerland on goal difference, with the two sides meeting for their clash on June 24.
Marsch not happy with his counterpart
As is customary, Marsch shook hands with Qatar boss Julen Lopetegui at the full-time whistle.
Lopetegui appeared to have taken issue with something from the match and was seen gesturing to his opposite number.
However, Marsch was certainly not impressed with what he had to say and threw his hands in the air before walking off.
When asked about the incident in his press conference, Marsch was quick to dismiss it.
“I’m not spending one second… it’s not worth any of our time to discuss.”
