Legendary Football Focus host Bob Wilson has admitted it is ‘disappointing’ the show will come off air this summer.
The BBC announced on Thursday that the programme will come to an end after 52 years.
Football Focus was first aired in 1974, with former Arsenal and Scotland goalkeeper Wilson as presenter.
He would go on to spend 20 years as host of the show before leaving the role in 1994.
The 84-year-old also presented Match of the Day and Grandstand during his time with the BBC.
‘Disappointing’ decision
Wilson joined talkSPORT Breakfast on Friday morning to react to the news of Football Focus being scrapped.
Sharing his immediate feelings on the decision, he explained: “Obviously I’m disappointed.
“I am incredibly disappointed that some decision has been made because I think when it comes to the weekend, it comes to the Saturday lunchtime and you’ve got all the games that are on over the weekend.
“Obviously they are spread a bit longer these days, sometimes Friday night, Saturday, Sunday, Monday nights and I think the programme gave that overall look at the game as it is at the highest level.
“To me, it’s very disappointing that it’s felt at this moment in time that the programme is not doing the job that I think it’s always done.”
The likes of Steve Rider, Gary Lineker, Ray Stubbs, Manish Bhasin and Dan Walker have all hosted Football Focus in the past.
Alex Scott is the current presenter, having taken over the role at the start of the 2021/22 season.
Fans ‘love’ Football Focus
Meanwhile, Wilson added that he is unsure of the reasons to end the show this summer.
He admitted: “I have to be honest with you, I’ve not spoken to anybody connected with the programme, but I am hugely disappointed because I think people love that programme.
“I don’t see how it can change dramatically in any other way than providing what it’s providing now, so really sad that it’s coming to an end.
“Having said that, there are a lot of programmes that don’t last for the length the Focus has been on the air.
“It provided me with so many memories including, obviously, some of the catastrophes. I’m still haunted now by the day of the Hillsborough disaster.
“I was not only presenting Football Focus, I was presenting Grandstand that day, actually, in the chair.
“It wasn’t Frank Bough or anybody else there, it was me and I just find that really difficult even now to comprehend.”
Wilson was presenting Grandstand on the day of the Hillsborough disaster in April 1989.
He later presented ITV’s Champions League, League Cup and FA Cup coverage after leaving the BBC in 1994.
As a player, Wilson made over 300 appearances in goal for Arsenal, winning a league and cup double in 1971.
Wilson was also part of the side which lifted the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup the year prior.
At international level, the Chesterfield-born keeper represented Scotland on two occasions.
