There is a positive buzz around the New York Giants at the moment.
At the conclusion of the 2026 NFL Draft, Giants fans were pleased at the haul they will be welcoming, headlined by Arvell Reese, who miraculously fell to them at No.5.
On the surface, things appear to be looking up for the Giants, their 4-13 2025 record is not reflective of the talent they have on their roster.
Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo and now Reese should be cornerstones for the franchise for years to come. But, one key executive may not be around to see it.
New York Daily News’ Giants reporter Pat Leonard was a guest on New York’s CBS 2 on Sunday night, and dropped a bombshell about the future of general manager Joe Schoen.
“When you talk to people in the league, it feels like anything’s on the board right now,” Leonard said.
“There are people in the NFL who think Joe Schoen could be fired this week. There are people who think that based on the positive returns publicly of this draft, that maybe he sticks around, but (head coach) John Harbaugh moves on after the season because this is Joe Schoen’s final year of his current contract.”
Schoen joined the franchise in 2022, and led the team to a 9-7-1 record and a playoff appearance in his first seasons at the helm.
However, the Giants have been unable to consistently win, going 13-38 over the last three seasons, forcing pressure to mount on the 46-year-old.
While the collaborative effort between Harbaugh and Schoen looked to have pay off in the draft, they did have to make a big decision.
They traded Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for the No. 10 pick, where they took Francis Mauigoa, an offensive lineman from the University of Miami.
Leonard said that Harbaugh viewed the need to trade defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals as a byproduct of a deteriorating relationship with Schoen and the current front office.
“He’s still pouring concrete on the foundation of a roster that he knows wasn’t good enough, and the operation that he inherited wasn’t good enough,” Leonard added.
“He has made a lot of drastic changes, and remember, at the beginning, he wouldn’t even take the job until he had final say.
“So now he has to decide how he uses that final say on the general manager he’s going to spend time working with.”
Leonard also added that Harbaugh’s influence not only on the field, but within the organization is growing, and he is looking into bringing a better fit into GM.
Armed with words of wisdom from Andy Ried, Harbaugh joined the Giants this offseason after he was fired by the Baltimore Ravens, the team who he spent 18-seasons with.
The Ravens finished 8-9 in 2025 and missed the playoffs. Harbaugh left as the franchises’ most successful head coach.
Giants fans are thrilled to have a head coach with a pedigree like Harbaugh’s.
But it appears the only way to fully embrace the next Era, is to relieve Schoen of his duties.
