Roy Keane has revealed he and Bruno Fernandes have cleared the air after the pair’s recent war of words.
The pair had a high-profile spat after Keane criticised Fernandes over his pursuit of the Premier League assist record, only for the Manchester United captain to accuse him of lying.
Fernandes made history by becoming the first player to provide 21 assists in a single top-flight campaign.
He broke the record on the final day of the season against Brighton, having equalled the previous best a week earlier in a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.
However, Red Devils great Keane took issue with Fernandes after the game, where he questioned his mindset.
He claimed the Portugal midfielder had admitted to passing when he should have shot during the game, as he chased the league record.
But Fernandes then bit back in an appearance on the Diary of a CEO podcast, insisting Keane had fabricated this quote.
The United midfielder said: “What I don’t like is when people lie about things and what you said about Roy Keane – basically what he said is a lie.”
‘A lovely chat’
Weeks on from their initial spat, Keane and Fernandes appear to have buried the hatchet, as the Irishman revealed the pair have spoken.
Speaking on the Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, Keane said that he and the 33-year-old had enjoyed a ‘lovely chat’.
He said: “There was a reaction to what we said after the podcast a few weeks ago, with what I said about Bruno Fernandes, and he reached out to me, wanted to chat.
“So I called him and we did have a lovely chat. We had a chat about a bit of everything.
“When we do podcasts or games, sometimes you think you say something afterwards, you’re trying to communicate something that doesn’t come across properly and people get upset.
“And he wanted to speak to me and we had a nice, mature conversation. It was a lovely chat.”
While Keane admitted he has no plans to address his comments with players on a more regular basis, he insisted he was pleased to clear the air with Fernandes.
The 54-year-old added: “I like having boundaries with players as I don’t want to speak to them every few weeks.
“But every now and again, a player might reach out, so I think it was good that I spoke to Bruno because there was a lot reported and he’s a big player for United.
“I like the idea of communicating, having a proper conversation. I really enjoyed it and hopefully he did too.”
Record breaker
After putting their public disagreement to one side, Keane would surely have had some praise for Fernandes in their conversation.
Man United’s skipper enjoyed a stunning individual campaign, who surpassed Premier League greats by breaking the assist record.
He leapfrogged Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne in the all-time ranks, who had shared the previous record by recording 20 assists each in the 2002/03 and 2019/20 seasons respectively.
As well as creating plenty of goals for his teammates, Fernandes contributed nine times himself in the league.
This helped United to a third-place Premier League finish, as they secured Champions League qualification after a two-year absence.
And after clinching the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award, Fernandes’ exploits now place him among the favourites to follow this up by winning the PFA Player’s Player of the Year prize too.
