Gibraltar have taken Uganda’s place in the World Cup of Darts after the latter nation’s players withdrew due to visa issues.
Patrick Ocheng and Juma Said were set to represent Uganda in their maiden appearance at the tournament, which gets underway on Thursday.
The duo had qualified via the African Darts Group qualifier, but will now see the historic participation pass them by.
Both players were denied visas for Germany, with the event being held in Frankfurt.
Despite launching an appeal against this decision, this was unsuccessful, forcing both Ocheng and Said to withdraw.
Malawi were then in line to take Uganda’s place, having finished as runners-up in qualifying, but they were also unable to source visas in time for the tournament.
As a result, Gibraltar will now enter the tournament instead, who now extend their impressive record as a permanent World Cup of Darts participant.
They will be represented by Craig Galliano and Justin Hewitt, who renew their partnership after also teaming up in last year’s edition.
Gibraltar will compete in Group D, where they will face 2019 runners-up the Republic of Ireland and Singapore.
The Gibraltar Darts Association (GDA) confirmed their participation in the World Cup after Uganda’s withdrawal in a statement.
The GDA wrote: “Following the withdrawal of Uganda from the tournament, Gibraltar has been called up by the PDC to take its place in this year’s World Cup in Frankfurt.
“As the next highest-ranked eligible nation not originally qualified, Gibraltar (Craig Galliano & Justin Hewitt) has been awarded a place in the 40-nation event and will once again compete on one of the biggest stages in world darts.
“The tournament takes place from 11–14 June and will be televised live on Sky Sports, giving Gibraltar the opportunity to showcase its talent to a worldwide audience.
“We would like to thank the PDC for this opportunity and wish our players the very best of luck as they prepare to represent Gibraltar on the world stage.”
