Two people were killed on Thursday when a small plane crashed into a house in Akron, Ohio, and caught fire, according to the local Fire Department.
The plane crashed into a house on a suburban street at 3:45 p.m., the Akron Fire Department said in a statement. The plane was a Piper PA-28 Cherokee, a single‑engine aircraft that can seat two or four people, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The bodies of two people were pulled from the plane, officials said.
Sgt. Jeremy A. Kindler, a spokesman for the Ohio State Highway Patrol, said the plane had taken off from the Akron Fulton Airport. It was not immediately clear where the plane was headed.
After the crash, heavy, black smoke and flames were seen coming from the home, the Fire Department said.
The home that was hit and the house next door were both evacuated, the Fire Department said, and no residents were injured. “All occupants of the residence were able to escape safely,” Sgt. Kindler said.
The F.A.A. said in a statement that it would assist the National Transportation Safety Board with the investigation. The N.T.S.B. said in a statement that it was “gathering information” about the crash.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
