England T20 squad: Uncapped James Coles picked to face England

Sussex all-rounder James Coles has been called up by England for their T20 series against India.

Coles, 22, is yet to make his international debut but hit a career-best 224 not out in in a County Championship game against Glamorgan earlier this month.

His record in the T20 Blast last season was also impressive, scoring 397 runs at an average of 33 and taking 10 wickets at an economy rate of just over nine.

Harry Brook will captain the side in five T20 matches despite being overlooked to lead the Test side against New Zealand.

There is no place for Test opener Ben Duckett, who was part of the squad that lost to India in this year’s T20 World Cup semi-final.

Coles cost £390,000 in the Hundred this year when being signed by London Spirit.

Jordan Cox, Sonny Baker and Saqib Mahmood return to the squad while Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton are unavailable due to injury.

Selector Marcus North said: “James Coles is an exciting addition and has earned his place.

“We have selected a larger squad to accommodate for the fact that this series will begin shortly after the Test series against New Zealand is due to conclude, which allows us to be flexible.”

The first T20 of the series takes place at Chester-le-Street on 1 July with the final match in Southampton on 11 July.

England are likely to come up against 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the series.
