Novak Djokovic fumed at a Wimbledon supervisor after an early roof closure during his quarter-final match with Felix Auger-Aliassime.
The Serbian took exception to the decision to close the Centre Court roof at 7:40pm – 50 minutes earlier than a previously-staged evening match.
Djokovic was seen in dialogue with official Denise Parnell prior to the third set where he laid out his gripes with the decision.
“The other day you didn’t want to close it until 8:30, now you want to close it? Djokovic said.
“You don’t want to get to 8:30? It’s 7:40 now. We can play another set outdoors. We’re an outdoor tournament.”
The supervisor appeared to reference a previous match involving Jannik Sinner, however the 39-year-old was having none of it.
He added: “With Jannik, I don’t care what happens in his matches. I’m talking about our match right now.
“You remember the first round, you didn’t close it until like 8:20. Now you want to close it at 7:40. Where’s the consistency?”
Djokovic finished: “You’re so proud of your rules and you’re not sticking to any kind of rules. You have no idea what the rule is.”
Canadian opponent Auger-Aliassime appeared to side with the seven-time Wimbledon champion, stating he would prefer the roof to stay open but neither player received their wish as they were both summoned off court while the roof closed for the third set.
The decision occurred with the match perfectly poised at one set apiece after Auger-Aliassime quickly cancelled out Djokovic’s 7-6 first-set lead.
And there was a clear impact by the closure early in the third with Auger-Aliassime 2mph down on his shots whilst Djokovic shots went up by 3mph.
Djokovic eyes more greatness
Djokovic is on a quest to land a 25th Grand Slam title but his road to the quarter-finals has not come without difficulty.
He appeared unhappy with his performance in the four set victory over qualifier Roman Safiullin last Sunday.
And victory over third seed Auger-Aliassime will mean Djokovic will need to up his display.
He has dropped a set in all but one of his four matches in what has been a largely favourable route so far.
Should Djokovic overcome Auger-Aliassime then it would hand him a record-extending 15th Wimbledon semi-final.
It would also be his eighth consecutive Wimbledon semi-final – the longest streak of men’s singles semi-final appearances at the tournament.
Jannik Sinner awaits the winner of the match. Meanwhile, Britain’s Arthur Fery is facing ninth seed Flavio Cobolli for a place in the last four.
