Oliver Glasner, Xabi Alonso and Thomas Frank have been tipped to take centre stage in this summer’s managerial merry-go-round.
The Premier League looks set for plenty of upheaval in the coming months, with a number of high-profile managerial exits expected to create a knock-on effect in dugouts across the country.
Who goes where?
Among the confirmed top-flight departures at the end of the season are Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner, who have already announced they will leave Bournemouth and Crystal Palace respectively.
While the Cherries have moved quickly to unveil Marco Rose as his incoming successor, there is still a vacancy to fill at Selhurst Park.
As speculation grows over Iraola and Glasner’s next moves, there is the small matter of managers who could look to return to the dugout this summer.
This includes Thomas Frank after his sacking by Tottenham in February, as well as Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea on New Year’s Day.
Further afield, Xabi Alonso has been continually linked with top jobs – namely Liverpool – since his dismissal by Real Madrid.
Adding to the potential upheaval, several Premier League bosses face uncertain futures, including Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and under pressure Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior, as well as Marco Silva at Fulham – who is out of contract in the summer.
With some huge moves on the cards, talkSPORT’s Ally McCoist gave his thoughts on where some of the leading names could end up.
“I don’t see Glasner as a Chelsea manager.”
First up for McCoist was outgoing Palace boss Glasner, who he tipped for a bright future after impressing in his two years in south London.
Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, he said of the Austrian: “I think he’s an absolutely top coach.Â
“I was a little bit surprised at some of his comments earlier on in the season, but a top coach will get a top job, and the job that he’s done is fantastic.”
Since taking charge of the Eagles in 2024, Glasner has guided the club to their first ever major honours with FA Cup glory last term, while his side are into this season’s Conference League semi-finals.
Co-host Jeff Stelling then pressed McCoist as to which ‘top job’ Glasner could get, before raising the possibility of him replacing Liam Rosenior at Chelsea, who faces an uncertain future if his side miss out on Champions League qualification.
To this, McCoist replied: “He won a European trophy [with Eintracht Frankfurt].
“And when you think about what he’s achieved, he’s turned that Palace team into a cup-winning side, winning the Community Shield as well.
“They lost one or two players and have been consistent this year, and they could, and probably should, win a European trophy.
“But I don’t see Glasner as a Chelsea manager.”
Two candidates for the Toon?
Moving onto where Glasner could go, McCoist claimed he could see him taking charge of Newcastle, should Eddie Howe leave the club.
The Englishman has faced speculation that this season could be his last after nearly five years on Tyneside, following a disappointing campaign which sees the Magpies 14th in the league table.
When the idea of Newcastle eyeing Glasner should Howe depart was floated, McCoist said: “Yes, more than Chelsea.
“I’ve got no background knowledge, but I’d be disappointed to see that…I’d like to see Howe in charge next season.
“But I could see Glasner more at Newcastle than at Chelsea.”
But Glasner wasn’t the only manager who McCoist believes would make an ideal replacement for Howe at St James’ Park.
While Xabi Alonso has been widely tipped to join Liverpool if Arne Slot is sacked in the summer, the Scot believes he could work well at Newcastle.
Asked about the Spaniard’s prospects, McCoist replied: “I think he might [be in the frame for Newcastle]. That doesn’t sound too daft.
“I think that’s the kind of project, job, that Alonso would have the opportunity to go and build and continue the great work that Eddie has done and achieved.Â
“But at this moment in time, I don’t know what will happen, but I’d be very disappointed [if Howe were to leave Newcastle].”
Alonso’s future was a topic of discussion on the latest episode of talkSPORT’s Inside The Toon.
Insisting Alonso would be his dream appointment, talkSPORT’s Jack Cunningham said: “I’m sorry, but if Alonso is available, do it.
“If Slot, as it seems like, is going to stay at Liverpool, because it seemed so obvious that Liverpool were just going to go for Alonso, a legend, get him back in at Anfield.
“But now, the mood has changed on Slot, because they’re going to seal Champions League football.
“If Alonso wants to come to Newcastle, please do that, otherwise, he will be at Liverpool in two or three years.
“This is a manager who took Leverkusen to an unbeaten season in the Bundesliga, they only lost in the Europa League final [against Atalanta] the whole year, that team had no right to beat Bayern Munich to the title.
“Then at Real Madrid, it’s interesting because that is more managing the egos in the dressing room, he wanted them to work hard.
“For example, when they lost the Super Cup to Barcelona, he wanted them to do a guard of honour, and [Kylian] Mbappe said, ‘No.’

“That was like he was losing the power battle there, you’re not going to necessarily get that at Newcastle.
“His tactical ability to coach a back three, a back four, the football he plays, the levels he got out of players at Bayer Leverkusen.
“This would be such an exciting appointment, it really would be.”
Before adding: “If Alonso is on the market, and Newcastle do move on from Howe, that is my top choice, do it, get it done.”
Frank verdict
As for who could fill Glasner’s shoes at Crystal Palace, McCoist believes sacked Tottenham boss Thomas Frank may be in line here.
Before his ill-fated eight months at Spurs, the Dane made his name during seven years at Brentford, who he guided to the Premier League before turning them into an established top-flight outfit.
Palace wasn’t the only job Frank was tipped for, with McCoist also claiming he could see him taking charge at the Bees’ west London rivals Fulham should Marco Silva depart.
Discussing his options, the talkSPORT host said: “I could see Thomas Frank maybe getting the Palace job.Â
“Or even the Fulham job if Marco Silva leaves. His future’s still kind of uncertain, isn’t it?
McCoist later added: “Thomas Frank is the one I could easily see staying in London and coming back.”
