Viktor Gyokeres might have been happy to take the Premier League title race to the wire – but Arsenal cult hero Perry Groves doesn’t agree.
The Swede will enjoy a fairytale ending to his debut season at Arsenal after they were crowned league champions on Tuesday thanks to Manchester City’s draw with Bournemouth.
This sparked wild scenes over at the Gunners’ London Colney training base, their players celebrated a first Premier League title in 22 years.
It sparked a party that went well into the night, with Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze among the stars spotted outside the Emirates Stadium at 5am on Wednesday.
Arsenal are now an unassailable four points clear of Man City heading into their final game against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
It means fans and players alike can breathe a huge sigh of relief, as they prepare to lift the Premier League trophy regardless of the result at Selhurst Park.
No pressure
While Arsenal are enjoying a first title since 2024, it’s a familiar story for Gyokeres – who has now tasted a third straight league glory.
Prior to his £63.7million arrival last summer, the striker enjoyed back-to-back Primeira Liga successes with Sporting CP in a stellar two-year spell in Portugal which saw him fire in 97 goals in 102 games.
And Gyokeres has revealed that while he is not fussed that his latest winners’ medal was secured whilst off the pitch, he would have happily soaked up the pressure had it gone down to the final day.
Fresh from winning the league, he joined Darren Bent on talkSPORT Drive where he was asked which scenario he would have preferred.
Gyokeres replied: “The last time I won the league [with Sporting], I think two times I watched another game [from home] and one time on the pitch, and I think there’s different ways to win it.
“As long as you win it, I couldn’t care less, but yeah, it’s nice to try [to win it on the pitch].
“We can maybe try it next season to win it on the pitch.”
After a challenging start to life in England, Gyokeres has enjoyed a strong second half to the campaign, and has now hit 21 goals in all competitions, 14 of which have come in Arsenal’s victorious Premier League campaign.
Gunning for glory
It’s fair to say Gyokeres will be in the minority for admitting he’d have risked taking the title race on the final day.
talkSPORT’s Inside Gooners panel got together to discuss their teams’ title triumph, and they all shared their relief at heading into Sunday’s game with the Premier League wrapped up.
Gunners icon Perry Groves insisted Arsenal’s fans have enjoyed the ideal scenario by having a stress-free week of celebrations, before their team receive a guard of honour at Crystal Palace on Sunday, where they will also lift the trophy.
The two-time First Division champion said: “This five days could have been the most nervy, anxious five days of our supporting careers and now we can just enjoy the whole five days, enjoy Sunday.
“The parade, where Crystal Palace have to clap us on the pitch – which will be superb.
“And these players as well can just relax that the tension anxiety is gone completely.”
Arsenal broadcaster Harry Symeou was in agreement, who admitted a final-day showdown would have been too much for him to take.
The diehard Gunner said: “Perry’s absolutely right.
“In my heart of hearts, I didn’t want to go to Crystal Palace needing to win.
“I know they’re in the Europa Conference final. I know all of that stuff is absolutely relevant and true, but I wanted us to have it done.

“I wanted it to be done. We always looked at that Bournemouth fixture and went, ‘That’s potentially one of them [where Man City could drop points].’
Sharing his reaction as Arsenal were crowned champions with City’s failure to win, he added: “I just dropped to my knees. My knees are still hurting!”
