No questions were raised when Ryan Spann was awarded a hefty $100,000 bonus for his monstrous knockout at UFC Vegas 116.
Spann opened up the main card of the Sin City show this past weekend against elite Brazilian grappler Marcus Buchecha.
The 34-year-old from Texas had accepted the UFC heavyweight contest on weeks’ notice, having moved up a division last year as a veteran at 205lbs.
Buchecha, on the other hand, was seeking his first in the UFC, following a loss and a draw in 2025, but was still widely favoured to get one over Spann.
What happened in Spann vs Buchecha?
The Brazilian got to work early, unloading damaging leg kicks early doors before an unsuccessful first takedown.
Spann, who clearly wanted to keep the fight on the feet, responded well, piercing his opponent’s guard more than once in the opening exchanges.
‘Superman’, however, was struggling to avoid Buchecha’s calf kicks.
And, although he did well to avoid being caught in a grappling match, he almost succumbed to an ankle lock just before the first round ended.
Both heavyweights were clearly tiring when they emerged for round two, but it wasn’t long before the fight was all over.
Just after the two-minute mark, Spann sensed an opening and stepped in with a swift left hook.
This left Buchecha wide open, and Spann quickly followed up with a rocket of a right hand that sent his opponent crashing to the canvas.
Spann didn’t even need to follow up with any punches on the ground as referee Herb Dean rushed over to wave the fight off.
Replays showed Buchecha was literally in mid-air with both feet briefly off the canvas following Spann’s devastating blow.
Spann, alongside Jackson McVey for his first-round submission of Sedriques Dumas, received the UFC’s Performance of the Night bonus, resulting in an extra $100K.
At the age of 40, Briton Davey Grant got the Fight of the Night bonus for his win over Adrian Luna Martinetti.

“I really just wanted to take my time,” Spann told Daniel Cormier after his win.
“We got this call not even a month ago, three weeks maybe. My brother came in immediately, and we all got to work.
“I wanted to maximise my time, which I felt we did with the training we had.
“I wanted to take my time; I knew I had it in the tank. Your boy can breathe now, so I was just chilling.”
UFC Vegas 116 saw Aljamain Sterling continue his quest for the UFC featherweight title with a win over Youssef Zalal in the main event.
Joselyne Edwards and Rafa Garcia both scored victories high up the bill at women’s bantamweight and lightweight, respectively.
