Will Lankshear signed off his stint at Kassam Stadium by scoring twice as Oxford United boss Matt Bloomfield tipped him for the top.
The Tottenham striker’s loan club had their Championship relegation confirmed shortly before their final home game of the season.
The U’s two-year stay in the second division came to an end following Charlton Athletic’s win over Hull City in Saturday’s early kick-off.
Nevertheless, Oxford ensured that their last Championship game in front of their home fans for at least a season was a memorable one.
Bloomfield’s men pummelled already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday 4-1, with Spurs loan star Lankshear having a hand in three goals.
The 21-year-old scored twice inside the opening half-an-hour to take his tally to 12 goals in all competitions for Oxford this campaign.
Lankshear then turned provider for Myles Peart-Harris’ strike that restored the club’s three-goal advantage 60 seconds after Wednesday had pulled one back.
It represents a remarkable rise for the England youth international, who had only scored his first senior goal in November 2024.
Lankshear, who netted away at Galatasaray in the Europa League in a match he was later sent off in, hadn’t scored a senior league goal until he joined Oxford on loan last summer.
Oxford boss Bloomfield heaped credit on the four-cap England Under-20 star during his post-match interview with talkSPORT.
Asked how he has found working with Lankshear, the 42-year-old said: “The answer to the first question is I’ve found him an absolute credit to his family, a credit to himself.
“A credit to his craft because he works so hard every day at his craft, his finishing, his hold-up play.
Will Lankshear ‘can go to the top’
“Where can he go in the game?” Oxford boss Bloomfield continued.
“If he can stay clear of injury and keep that focus that he has, I think he can go to the top because his finishing is top draw.
“It’s his focus, his single-mindedness to be the best he can possibly be, that is so admirable. And I wish him every success.”
Lankshear underlining his credentials at both Championship level and at a relegated team could prove particularly timely.
Ironically, his parent club, Tottenham, could find themselves in the second tier next season despite their 1-0 win over Wolves.
Even if Spurs, who are languishing in the drop zone with just four matches remaining, avoid the drop, Roberto De Zerbi will be desperate for fresh attacking options.
Only Richarlison has broken into double digits for goals this campaign, with Lankshear getting his chance during pre-season.
Yet Oxford head coach Bloomfield refused to be drawn into whether Spurs will invest in their academy product over a new striker signing.
“I’m not here to make decisions for other people,” he added on Lankshear’s Tottenham prospects.
“I think he’s a boy of immense promise, and he’s been a pleasure to work with for this season.”
