It’s Maneater versus Littlecote in the feature of seven races from Newcastle today – live on Sky Sports Racing.
3.00 Newcastle – Maneater faces Littlecote in feature
Maneater, a 100,000 guineas purchase back in 2023, returns from a lay-off in search of her maiden win in the Mini Golf At High Gosforth Park Fillies’ Novice Stakes after two placed efforts thus far. This filly is a half-sister to Australian Group 1 winner Selino, who was a solid Group 2 operator at his peak on UK soil.
Andrew Balding’s Littlecote looks to finally get off the mark after three successive runner-up efforts. This daughter of Camelot hung right in the early stages at Wolverhampton the last day, which proved costly as she was beaten by a neck. If her quirks have been rectified, she’ll trouble the judge again under PJ McDonald.
Frankel filly Hello Friend represents Karl Burke here, whilst Danseuse goes for Simon and Ed Crisford – making her first appearance under rules.
3.30 Newcastle – Seven line up for newcomers’ contest
An intriguing-looking newcomers’ Sunday Lunch At The Border Minstrel Maiden Stakes sees Big Cigar – who was a £140,000 purchase for Richard Fahey – line up. Rider Oisin Orr has been operating at a 21% strike rate over the last fortnight and notched 16 winners at the track last year.
Karl Burke has Martial Order, a half-brother to Gold Digger – who won as two-year-old over six furlongs.
Andrew Balding’s Lehbab Prince cost €120,000 as is partnered with PJ McDonald whilst Real Trouble, for Archie Watson, cost 105,000 guineas at the sales.
7.50 Hexham – Bold Step represents King and Queen
For Hexham’s feature Northumberland County Show Novices’ Hurdle, Nicky Henderson sends out Bold Step in the colours of HM The King and Queen. This six-year-old chased home Mortal Coil at Exeter on debut and now steps up in trip to two miles and four furlongs.
The formidable combination of Olly Murphy and Sean Bowen are represented by Mister St Eloi, who was second behind subsequent Fontwell winner Hardly Surprising in a point-to-point contest last month. That form suggests a degree of talent and if he settles, he could well trouble the judge first time out under rules.
Passing Diamond is easily the most experienced of the field and tasted success for the first time at this venue the last day. He was well-backed on that occasion and similar market support here would indicate he is primed to strike again for Ben Haslam.
