Thomas Tuchel has been told to take another leaf out of Arsenal’s playbook by using Declan Rice to solve England’s right-back issues.
That is the opinion of talkSPORT’s Tony Cascarino, who argued that the midfielder is the only profile in the Three Lions’ 26-man squad able to physically handle the World Cup’s elite wingers.
Tuchel’s preferred right-back, Reece James, was forced out of the 2-0 win over Panama through injury after starting the first two games.
The Chelsea captain picked up the knock during Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Ghana and is now sweating on the rest of his World Cup.
Right-back is a position England most lacks depth in, with Tino Livramento pulling out of the squad on the eve of the tournament.
As first revealed by talkSPORT, Jarell Quansah, who typically plays centrally, was given the nod over Djed Spence to replace James.
However, the Bayer Leverkusen star was forced off with an injury of his own following a tussle with Panama’s José Luis Rodríguez.
“Another right-back injured, so he needed to go off straight away,” Tuchel told talkSPORT’s Faye Carruthers post-match.
“He said to me now that he had it quite a few times, he knows how painful it is. He still has hope that it’s within days that he’s better, but he cannot tell right now because it’s too painful, it’s too fresh.
“Let’s see, we need to take it and assess it day by day. I guess if he’s not available, we’ll find another solution!”
Tuchel to copy Arsenal again?
Immediately after Quansah limped off, England opened the scoring through Jude Bellingham in Arsenal fashion from a corner.
The Premier League champions scored 19 goals from corners in the top-flight last season, and Tuchel hasn’t been shy about the Three Lions replicating Mikel Arteta’s set-piece masters.
Harry Kane scored from a Rice delivery in the 4-2 victory against Croatia, with Bukayo Saka taking over for Bellingham’s Panama strike.
And talkSPORT’s Cascarino believes Tuchel could take another leaf out of the Arteta playbook by playing Rice at right-back.
Declan Rice at right-back?
The Arsenal midfielder briefly deputised in the position during the club’s 1-0 win over West Ham in May following an injury to Ben White.
The decision, which was later reversed when Cristhian Mosquera came on, left Gary Neville, on commentary for Sky Sports, ‘stunned’.
But Cascarino claimed that it is an idea Tuchel can revisit when Rice is available again, having been an unused sub for the Panama victory.
“Against the very best, they’ll punish you,” Cascarino told Max Scott of his England assessment on World Cup Weekender. “Certain forwards will punish you.
“There are a lot of good forwards, as we’ve seen already in this competition, that can make the difference in a moment.
“So, look, I do think England will improve,” Cascarino continued. “Find a solution to that right-back area.
“You might see Thomas Tuchel do something very different.
“He might even select a midfielder to go and play right-back. You know, he might do that.”
He added: “There’ll be someone that he’s going to try and work out who goes there. I’m not so sure yet. It’s one of them.
“It’s the position in the England team that’s totally up for grabs, it’s the right back. So someone’s going to play there, and it might not be the obvious, because obviously, Djed Spence [against Panama] would have been the right solution, if you think of it logically, and go, well, he plays right-back, or he can play left-back, so he can do that job, and it isn’t much of an issue.
“But he didn’t play him yesterday, unless he’s got an injury we don’t know about.
“It’s not a case of, oh, well, I’ll go [for] Trevoh Chalobah, who could play that right-back position, or I could even play a midfielder.
“Could I play Declan Rice at right-back? If I’m brutally honest… I would really think about playing Declan Rice there. I think he could do it.”
Cascarino explained: “I had this discussion about Paul McGrath. Paul McGrath, you could play right-back, centre-half, or midfield.
“And I’ve always said, and Declan Rice has disagreed with me on it, I always said, Declan Rice can play centre-half, he can play midfield, and you could play him as a full-back.
“Steven Gerrard, you could play as a right-back. He did it in the Champions League final because he was so good athletically.
“Now, if I wanted someone to be able to handle someone physically and athletically, I’m looking at Declan Rice.
“I don’t think you need two holding midfielders against DR Congo. I think that if you go, Elliot Anderson and Rice, I think you’re going to lose something elsewhere on the pitch, attacking-minded.
“So, look, we’re batting around some small details, but it could be very vital.
“And I watched DR Congo, I worked on their game, and I thought Portugal got caught up with having too much possession in bad areas that didn’t really hurt DR Congo.”
