Fabian Hurzeler believes Thomas Tuchel can star in the biggest story at the World Cup by winning the tournament with England.
The former Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss is tasked with making the Three Lions world champions once again.
England have gone 60 years without international glory, with five quarter-final appearances being the closest they’ve come since.
Tuchel, who has won three league titles in Europe and the Champions League, faced criticism for some of his 26-man squad selections.
Players such as Cole Palmer, Harry Maguire and Morgan Gibbs-White are notable absentees from the tournament.
However, Hurzeler has backed his German compatriot to be successful at the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Brighton head coach is a pundit for talkSPORT this summer, and joined the White and Jordan show to discuss Tuchel’s chances.
“What chance (does) a German ultimately write the big headline here at this World Cup?” Jim White asked. “Might it be Thomas Tuchel?”
“It can be, it can definitely be Thomas Tuchel,” Hurzeler insisted. “I’m impressed by his work, and I’m also impressed by his decision-making about his squad.
“I know he got a lot of criticism for that, but let’s see how far he’s going. I’m definitely impressed (with) what he did with the England squad.
“I think he brought the culture back, he brought this togetherness, this connection on the field back. I really see a structure, I really see good connections between the players, between the different parts of the team.
“I always see a real good idea, and I think one big plus from him is he knows how to win trophies, and he’s definitely a tournament coach.
“So, I definitely think he can write a big headline because I’m impressed by his decision-making, by his work in recent months for England.”
However, when asked if he already has an idea of who will win the World Cup, Hurzeler did not name England.
“I have two favourites, if I’m honest. I have Spain and, of course, France; they still have the strongest squad in my opinion.
“They have unbelievable quality in every position, even double options in each position.
“So, if they understand to work for each other, if they build this togetherness on the pitch, then I still think that these two teams have big opportunities to win it.”
Tuchel helps to change England culture
As Hurzeler mentioned, Tuchel has been keen to restore the culture in England’s squad ahead of his first major tournament in charge.
He recently hinted at a brotherhood amongst his players and said that the 26 biggest talents do not necessarily make the best group.
Amid a desired increase in connection, Jude Bellingham was on hand to give an honest reflection of their shortcomings at Euro 2024.
England, then managed by Gareth Southgate, lost 2-1 to Spain and missed out on the European title for a second time.
“I think at the Euros, we got some things a little bit wrong off the pitch,” he said on the Lions’ Den show.
“I don’t feel like the group connected as well as it could have for a number of reasons.”
Bellingham added: “I think expectation was part of it. We did well in 2018 (World Cup), we did well in Qatar (2022 World Cup), we did well at the Euros both times.
“When it came to that tournament, I think we were seen as one of the two or three teams that should win it.
“We weren’t playing particularly well, which doesn’t help, so even when we’re winning, it felt like you didn’t get the feeling that we were as happy as we should be.
“There has to be that element of relentlessness, and you want to win, but the nature of football, especially at this level, is that wins go out the system very quickly. I think we should have held onto that moment a little bit more.
“I think this time round, having those experiences, knowing that, for example, the guy who scores the winning goal in a World Cup final isn’t always the one that you bet your house on.
“So everyone’s got to be ready, everyone’s got to feel loved, everyone’s got to feel like they’re playing a huge part in the team.
“The other thing is to just enjoy it, enjoy the sessions, enjoy the games, enjoy the suffering when we’re suffering in games, enjoy the feeling of having your backs against the wall.
“Then, when you do win, enjoy the feeling of overcoming another country, it’s a huge feat. They’re my two takeaways.”
England get underway against Croatia on June 17, live on talkSPORT, with Ghana and Panama their other two Group L opponents.
