Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler insists Thomas Tuchel’s treatment of Djed Spence is the total opposite of ‘bullying’.
Tuchel has been on Spence’s case several times throughout England’s World Cup campaign.
In a training drill, Tuchel was heard yelling at Spence: “Djed, Djed, Djed, wake up! Wake up!”
The Three Lions boss continued to single out the full-back during England’s 0-0 draw with Ghana during the group stage.
Tuchel was once again highly demanding of Spence in England’s come-from-behind win over DR Congo in their Round of 32 clash due to the latter’s decision not to launch the ball forward off a throw-in.
Given it is Spence who appears to bear the brunt of Tuchel’s frustrations the most, some have questioned whether the England manager has it out for the Tottenham star.
Hurzeler shoots down Tuchel’s ‘bullying’ theory
However, when asked if that was the case on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan, Hurzeler replied: “No. For me, it seems the opposite.
“After the first game against Croatia, he put him in the starting XI.
“He’s convinced of his qualities especially regarding his defending and his efforts.
“In the minutes he played against Croatia he was outstanding. Then he came into the team against Ghana and he did his job well.
“Tuchel always puts the teams first and that’s why for me it’s not bullying.”
Will Spence start against Mexico?
Spence, who has featured in all four of England’s World Cup matches at both left and right-back, is no guarantee to start against Mexico in the Round of 16.
talkSPORT understands starting right-back Reece James is in contention to return having not played in England’s last two matches due to a hamstring issue.
Regardless of who ends up on the flanks of England’s backline against Mexico, where they will have to contend with the altitude as well as El Tri’s stars, Hurzeler believes Tuchel has not left a stone unturned in terms of what he wants his full-backs to do.

“I think he (Tuchel) has a clear profile regarding his full-backs,” Hurzeler said.
“Clear demands, clear expectations and clear profile in what a full-back should be doing in his system.
“I see a quite flexible system and I see the full-back as a playmaker role and full-back that can really create a dynamic with deep runs and overlaps.
“I think he keeps pushing Spence because he’s a profile that has all these attitudes inside of him and these qualities.
“He likes full-backs who join the attack and who attack the box.
“He has that with O’Reilly on the left side and Spence on the right side because Reece James is injured.
“He tries to get the best out of them. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t work. But for me, the most important thing is to be really consistent in the messaging and the principles he wants the full-back to play.
“That’s what I can see in the first games so far, although not everything is perfect.
