Egypt are through to the Round of 16 but Mohamed Salah isn’t thinking about a battle with Lionel Messi yet.
The 34-year-old was overcome with emotion as he helped his nation to victory over Australia on penalties in the last 32.
Salah makes history
The Pharaohs and the Socceroos played out a fascinating 1-1 draw in the opening 90 minutes and extra-time couldn’t separate them.
That’s mostly thanks to some brilliant saves and last ditch defending, particularly from Tony Popovic’s Australia.
Goalkeeper Patrick Beach was key to keeping it level but was then substituted a minute before the game went to penalties.
However, replacement Mat Ryan, failed to get near any Egypt spot-kick with Leicester’s Harry Souttar and 18-year-old Lucas Herrington missing the decisive shots.
Salah himself pulled off a cheeky Panenka, allowing himself a smile as he ran back to the halfway line.
And when the winning penalty kick was slotted home by Hossam Abdelmaguid, the outgoing Liverpool star was overcome with emotion.
After a quick roar of celebration he sportingly consoled Australian players in the centre circle.
Emotional Egypt scenes
He was then spotted crying with teammates and then tearfully spoke to the media.
He said: “It’s history.
“I told the boys before the game that this is the biggest stage you can play on in your life. Enjoy it and don’t let the pressure get to you.
“I’m glad that we managed to win the game, bad luck for them, they lost on penalties. I’m happy that we wrote history today.”
The win sets up a clash with the winner of Argentina vs Cape Verde.
Messi next for Egypt?
It could see Salah face Lionel Messi, another iconic football star likely playing in his last World Cup.
However, the Egyptian laughed off a question from a reporter about the tie.
He smiled: “That might happen, but we must first respect the Cape Verde national team.
“Argentina will play their next match shortly, and after that, we’ll see what happens.”
It’s not a face Salah will want to meet again.
The pair have played twice in all competitions across their careers.
They first met in a 1-1 draw with Barcelona when he was at Roma in 2015.
The second was in a famous 3-0 loss for Liverpool in 2019 in the Champions League as Messi scored twice.
Salah, though, missed the second leg of that semi-final tie and witnessed a stunning 4-0 win at Anfield.
Meanwhile, on his cool Panenka, he added: “If somebody was going to do it, it would be me.
“I am more experienced than others and I wanted to give them confidence. I decided last minute. I don’t know if it’s my last World Cup but I had to do it.”
