The PGA Tour rolls onwards to Quail Hollow this week for the Truist Championship in Charlotte.

The event returns to the North Carolina venue after a one-year hiatus, following Quail Hollow Club hosting the PGA Championship in 2025 when world number one Scottie Scheffler triumphed.

After three successive runner-up finishes, Scheffler takes a break this week but Masters champion Rory McIlroy tees it up for the first time since landing his second Green Jacket, returning to a venue where he is a four-time winner. McIlroy has landed Quail Hollow glory in 2010, 2015, 2021 and 2024.

Now a Signature Event, the Truist Championship has established itself as one of the strongest tournaments on the PGA Tour. Sepp Straka landed this event 12 months ago when it was held at Philadelphia Cricket Club.

Truist Championship Tips

  • Rickie Fowler @ 30/1
  • Justin Thomas @ 45/1
  • Sahith Theegala @ 75/1

Theegala ready to contend again

It has been an in-and-out sort of season for Sahith Theegala, but the American is capable of contending at Quail Hollow if his driver performs.

The 28-year-old can lay claim to four top-tens this year, including at Torrey Pines in the Farmers Insurance Open and the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, both testing layouts.

He shot an opening round 62 at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans last month and signed off the Cadillac Championship at Doral on Sunday with an eight-under par bogey-free 64.

Theegala missed the PGA Championship at this venue due to a neck issue last season. He needs a good week off the tee, but he is 11th on Strokes Gained: Around The Green and 14th in scrambling, while he ranks fourth-best on the PGA Tour for putts per round this season.

Fowler back on familiar ground

Rickie Fowler secured his maiden PGA Tour win at Quail Hollow in 2012 and, after a couple of years in the shade, the former US Ryder Cup star could shine back here.

Fowler ranks 19th on the PGA Tour this season for accuracy off the tee and while not amongst the longest hitters, he averages more than 300 yards.

He’s got three top 10 finishes and shot two rounds in the 60s at the Cadillac Championship, finishing tied-ninth.

He also secured a top ten finish at the RBC Heritage recently and this venue could bring another challenge for him.

Major winner returns to Quail Hollow

Rory McIlroy has a stellar record around this track, the two-time Masters winner having four wins, but Justin Thomas is the Quail Hollow Major man in the field as world number one Scottie Scheffler takes a week off.

Thomas won the first of his two PGA Championships here in 2017. A majestic ball striker at his best, JT hasn’t kicked on as expected, with just one of his 16 PGA Tour wins coming in the last four years.

He was inside the top ten at the Players’ Championship in March and signed off his RBC Heritage defence at Harbour Town with a 66 last time out.

Thomas was tied-second in this event 12 months ago at Philadelphia Cricket Club and his proven pedigree in the famous concluding Green Mile should stand him in good stead.
