Steve Bruce has told talkSPORT that he wouldn’t be surprised if Thomas Tuchel brings Luke Shaw to his third World Cup this summer.
The Manchester United defender hasn’t added to his 34-caps since Tuchel took charge of the Three Lions, despite his form earning him a name check by the German earlier this year.
Shaw, whose last appearance for England came during the Euro 2024 final 21 months ago, is enjoying his cleanest bill of health in years.
The 30-year-old had to wait nine months after his country’s defeat to Spain to be fit enough to start another match for Man United.
The left-back played just 12 times in all competitions last season and was told by Troy Deeney that England had ‘moved past him.’
However, Shaw is now within one match of setting a personal record of starting every single Premier League game for United in a season.
And the defender marked his appearance in the Red Devils’ final home game of the campaign by ending his lengthy goal drought.
Shaw scored his side’s opener against Nottingham Forest to end a run of 73 games without a Premier League goal.
It was his first strike in red since January 2023 against Bournemouth and increased the calls for him to earn an England recall.
talkSPORT’s Sam Matterface explained on our exclusive coverage from Old Trafford: “He still wants to be the England left back.
“He’s hopeful of getting on that plane, and you know what, in recent weeks, there’s been so many issues with England defenders that there’s every chance that he might just surprise everyone and make it into Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
“It’s been a long time since he registered a goal for Manchester United, and he will be hopeful that Thomas Tuchel takes notice of that.”
Luke Shaw backed for England World Cup spot
Former Man United captain Steve Bruce had his say on Shaw’s international hopes and said he wouldn’t be surprised by a recall.
“The one thing about him this year in particular is he’s played more games this season, I would have thought, than he’s ever done before”, Bruce added on talkSPORT.
“He stayed injury-free. He looks fit, and he looks well and healthy.
“I wouldn’t be surprised – Who is there when we talk about England left-backs?”
Tuchel himself told talkSPORT that Shaw was among the stars ‘back in the picture’ for England following his return to fitness and form.
Luke Shaw would never shut England door
However, the Three Lions boss then snubbed Gareth Southgate’s first-choice left-back when picking his 35-man squad in March.
Shaw remains hopeful he can force his way into Tuchel’s thinking, with Lewis Hall, Nico O’Reilly, and Myles Lewis-Skelly all other options.
Asked whether the England door is still open, Shaw told talkSPORT in February: “Oh, of course, you would never shut it.
“I’ve had some amazing memories with England, played in the last two European Championship finals, and I feel like I’ve been a big part of that.
“So yeah, of course I’ll never shut that door, especially now when I feel like you know my fitness is at a really good level and I think the manager of England knows what I can bring and what I can do.
“So, for me, it’s just what I need to do is just keep playing games, keep fit, and whatever happens happens.”
