Shilo Sanders’ attorney has filed requests to limit the scope of evidence allowed in his bankruptcy trial.
The former Colorado Buffaloes star was involved in an incident in his Texas high school that ultimately saw him file for bankruptcy with $11 million in debt in 2023.
Per USA Today, Shilo is heading for a trial date on August 31 as he looks to wipe his debt, which is almost all owed to John Darjean — a former security guard at his school.
His attorney filed the requests under seal with descriptions relating to his disciplinary history as a minor in Texas.
The pretrial requests ask the judge to exclude or limit evidence or arguments to prevent irrelevant or inflammatory information from influencing the outcome.
Why did Shilo Sanders declare bankruptcy?
Shilo — the son of NFL great Deion — was accused of assaulting and severely injuring Darjean as a 15-year-old.
The former security guard allegedly tried to confiscate his phone.
Darjean sued Sanders and his parents over in 2016, but the guardians were dropped in 2019.
He then won an $11.89 million judgement against Shilo, who didn’t show up for the trial, in 2022.
The 26-year-old filed for bankruptcy when Darjean tried to collect.
He is fighting to receive his money on the grounds that the debt stems from a âwillful and malicious injury.â
Under such cases, debt is not dischargeable in bankruptcy court. Shilo maintains that he was acting in self-defense.
Shilo Sanders’ NFL career
Shilo followed his younger brother Shedeur into the NFL in 2025.
He didn’t hear his name called in the NFL Draft but joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a undrafted free agent.
After some initial promise, the defensive back lost his temper and threw a punch in a preseason game.
He was released soon after and the fine wiped out almost all of his meagre NFL earnings.
Shilo has remained active on social media and recently caused controversy when defending his brother.
Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot reported that $230 million Deshaun Watson appeared to have become the frontrunner to become Cleveland’s starting quarterback for the 2026 NFL season.
âDeshaun Watson emerged from the Browns voluntary minicamp last week with an edge over Shedeur Sanders in the two-man quarterback competition and has the inside track to be named the Browns QB1,â Cabot wrote.
“With my breaking news here that Deshaun Watson has taken the lead over Shedeur Sanders in the #Browns QB competition and has the inside track to win it, I think they should declare him QB1 asap and let the 1st team offense start to cook. There’s no time to waste,” she posted to X shortly after.
With that quote going viral on Instagram, Shedeur’s older brother Shilo publicly called out Cabot in the comments section writing: “Go make a sandwich Mary.”
âWell, let me just say about that that I really do believe that I have been an inspiration for lots of women and young girls to know that you can go out there and do a good job in a manâs world, and take on all of the â all of that that comes with that,â Cabot responded.
âAnd I know that there are so many women who have joined the football world, especially because of some of the things that Iâve been able to do over the years, and Iâm happy about that and I know that will continue.
“And now weâve got women in flag football, playing flag football all over the place, and Iâm just happy that I have been able to help set the tone and open some doors in that way, and I know that will continue, and thatâs just how I feel about that.â
NFL’s Greatest……
Ranking the top 10……
While Cabot chose to take the high road, Shilo doubled down.
âIf youâre gonna be a reporter, be a reporter and report facts,â Sanders responded on his Twitch channel. âWhenever you have your opinion, and your opinion is always something hateful to Shedeur, then it makes it seem like itâs something weird. Like itâs an agenda that you have going on.
âAnd thereâs plenty of women in this field that take this serious and take reporting football serious and actually do homework and study the game and get the statistics right and get the news right.
“But with you itâs so much emotion that I donât want you to make women look bad when it comes to reporting, because you donât have the will to actually want to report real things that are going on.
âSo it donât even make sense. You wanna go talk about this and that in minicamp? They donât even have all the receivers. How you gonna say, âOh, this is what I think is gonna happenâ? We donât care what you think is gonna happen.
“Let Shedeur go practice. He donât need to be going on Instagram and Twitter and stuff and always seeing you just bad mouth him. Thatâs what I got a problem with. You know what Iâm saying? If itâs reported, itâs reported. You have facts, you have news.
“But when it comes to your opinion, youâve been saying crazy things for the past â since heâs been there. So itâs like, just chill with that. Because it donât make no sense, and it makes you look crazy like you donât know what youâre talking about.
“And for all the women that actually take the time to go do their research and actually be real reporters and real journalists, then thatâs gonna make them look bad, because you already know as a woman in this field of reporting football and sports, like, itâs hard.
“So donât make it hard on everybody, just because you donât feel like it. Thatâs all I gotta say about that.â
