Scottie Scheffler didn’t get off to the best start in his grand slam chase at the US Open.

The world No.1 finished two-over in his opening round at Shinnecock Hills, a notoriously difficult course that offered even tougher conditions than normal on Thursday.

Play was suspended due to heavy fog during the morning session, with strong winds causing havoc throughout the day.

Scheffler toiled with the Long Island course for much of his round, but wrapped up in style to save par from a bunker on the 18th hole.

He made four birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey to card two-over 72, and clearly wasn’t too happy with his overall effort.

The American star, who has a chance of making history this weekend, hit the range after his five-hour long slog around Shinnecock.

As he hit some balls, Scheffler appeared animated alongside swing coach Randy Smith.

Footage showed the pair in what was described as a ‘big-hitting’ conversation.

The US Open broadcasters also suggested Smith was ‘constantly emphasising’ the ‘fundamentals’ to his player.

“This is not uncommon, they will go back and forth,” the commentators said.
