Scottie Scheffler’s frustrations continue to boil.
The world’s No. 1 golfer finished as the runner-up at the Cadillac Championship, after Players Champion Cameron Young claimed victory on Sunday in Miami for his second PGA Tour title of the 2026 season.
Young won by six shots at Trump National Doral Miami, the second-highest margin of victory on the PGA Tour this year.
But for Scheffler, this marks his third consecutive runner-up finish, becoming the first man to do so since Sergio Garcia in 2014.
The 29-year-old lost out to Rory McIlroy at the 2026 Masters, while Matt Fitzpatrick claimed the bragging rights at the RBC Heritage.
Despite Scheffler’s remarkable consistency out on the course, with it having just been announced that he has committed to the 2026 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities, there is just something that continues to go amiss.
Ryder Cup captain in 2014 Paul McGinley has attempted to offer a reason as to why, telling Sky Sports: “Scheffler is coming out of the blocks slowly.
“We talk about how great this player is and we haven’t seen this consistency since Tiger Woods. Yet he seems to come out of the blocks slow all the time.
“He did it again this week. He shot 71 in round one, Cameron Young shot 64, and that was the tournament right there.
“The same at The Masters, he was 12 shots behind Rory and only lost by a shot.
“He has got to fix that if he’s going to take the next step and win a major championship, which we know he is capable of.”
Aside from an opening-round score of 63 at the American Express in January, Scheffler has broken 70 just once in the first rounds of the nine tournaments that he has featured in in 2026.
This is a stark comparison from last year, whereby he broke 70 in 16 of the 20 opening rounds he played.
Scheffler’s frustrations boil over
Scheffler may also need to get ahold of his temper.
During his final round at the Miami Championship on the ninth hole, the American could be seen in fumes and getting in the face of his long-term caddie and mentor Ted Scott.
After he putted the ball into the hole from just a few centimeters away for a bogey, the cameras caught Scheffler’s angry confrontation at Scott, where it can be ascertained that his frustrations were with his caddie’s guidance – or lack thereof – during the hole.
“He has just about had enough of these greens,” the Sky Sports commentator said.
“He’s simply out of answers. Only birdies coming I’m sure are tap-ins at the par fives today. Ted Scott’s ears may be bleeding at the end of the day.”
After the round was completed, though, and Young was confirmed as champion, Scheffler’s bad mood subsided, as he gave glowing praise to his Ryder Cup teammate.
“I’ve always been very impressed with Cam’s game.” Scheffler said. “Every time I played with him throughout – I mean, I’ve known him a long time. Every time I’ve played with him I’ve always been impressed with his game.
“This week he hit a lot of quality shot. A lot of quality iron shots, quality tee shots, especially on the holes where it really matters. There are some tee shots out here that are really difficult and he stepped up and hit the shots.
“On the greens he was unbelievable this week. First 27 holes I don’t think he missed anything really. It was nuts. Guy was just holing everything. When you’re hitting really good shots and holing a lot of putts that’s a recipe to run away with a golf tournament.”
Next up for Scheffler is the PGA Championship which runs through May 14-17. The American enters as the favorite to win (7/2), ahead of McIlroy (7/1) and Bryson DeChambeau (10/1).
