Rory McIlroy has made it very clear he has concerns over the PGA Tour’s planned new-look schedule.
Chief executive Brian Rolapp unveiled the radical proposals earlier this year, which would see events get separated by tiers, with promotion and relegation between them.
Meanwhile, a larger number of ‘signature events’ would also be added with expanded fields of 120 players and cuts after the first two rounds.
To facilitate the promotion and relegation, tournaments would be given ‘track one’ and ‘track two’ status.
Among those ‘track two’ events include the Canadian Open, which was won by Bud Cauley in Ontario on Sunday.
McIlroy fears events deemed to be ‘track two’ will suffer as a result of the proposed changes.
Meanwhile, he has urged for the PGA Tour to consider the success of the tour prior to LIV Golf’s emergence in 2021.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of this week’s US Open, McIlroy was asked about his concerns over the new-look schedule.
The six-time major winner admitted: “An event like last week, the Canadian Open, is potentially going to one of these track twos.
“Track two is a glorified Korn Ferry event, that’s what track two is going to be, so I don’t think the Canadian Open should be one of those.
“I just think there’s going to be certain events that might lose their stature if a sponsor doesn’t pony up $30million (£22m), so that’s the tough thing.
“I’m not in those rooms. I don’t know. I play my schedule and I’ll continue to play my schedule, which is getting less and less as the years go on.
“It’s funny that as they’ve done all this work, you start to realise that the way the PGA Tour was before LIV came along was actually pretty good. It was a pretty good structure, and everything sort of worked pretty well.
“LIV created this false economy where we had to up prize funds and had to cut fields and try to support the top players and all that stuff, which I think needed to happen because that was the only way to retain talent at the time.
“Now that LIV looks like it’s less of a threat, I think the old ways of the PGA Tour weren’t actually that bad.”
LIV was founded in 2021 before launching with an inaugural season the following year.
Whilst a host of PGA Tour stars defected to the Saudi-backed league, its future is now in doubt after the Public Investment Fund withdrew financial backing earlier this year.
Brooks Koepka has already returned to the PGA Tour, whilst Patrick Reed is eligible to make a comeback in August after leaving LIV.
When does McIlroy play at the US Open?
McIlroy is currently preparing to contest the US Open at Shinnecock Hills this week.
The year’s third major gets underway in New York on Thursday.
It will be the first time the event has been staged at Shinnecock Hills since 2018, which saw McIlroy miss the cut.
Meanwhile, he is eyeing his first win since successfully defending the Masters in April.
The 2011 US Open champion begins his opening round at 12.52pm alongside Ludvig Aberg and Tommy Fleetwood.
