The Premier League looks set to be a period of significant transition amongst its managers.
Iconic coaches are packing their bags, and the league’s most prestigious clubs are preparing for a massive game of musical chairs.
Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner have confirmed their departures, while Marco Silva’s future at Fulham remains uncertain.
Critical questions remain: Who will land the permanent Manchester United job? Has Eddie Howe taken Newcastle as far as he can? And is this the right time for Pep Guardiola to step away?
Alex Crook and Olly Clink discussed the future of every Premier League dugout on the talkSPORT Daily podcast.
AFC Bournemouth
Current manager: Andoni Iraola League position: 7th
The south coast outfit announced Marco Rose as their incoming manager just days after Iraola revealed he would leave after three years.
The ex-Dortmund manager brings a strong track record of developing young talent including Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Crook praised the club’s succession planning, saying: “I’m really impressed. Bill Foley is one of the best owners in the division, it’s no surprise they had a plan in place.
“I’ve been told they offered Iraola the biggest contract they’ve ever been willing to dish out for a player or manager, so when he decided to move on, they pivoted quickly to Rose. There was a little talk about Kieran Mckenna but Rose was always their prime target.
“He ticks a lot of the boxes, he’s got European experience, managing in the Champions League and the Europa League and it’s perfect, with Bournemouth on the edge of a historic European qualification.”
Bournemouth must now navigate the ‘Squad Cost Ratio’ rules, which limit on-pitch spending to 85 per cent of football-related revenue and net profit.
A recent success story is the signing of the Brazilian winger Rayan, who has scored three goals in 11 appearances since his January arrival.
Arsenal
Current manager: Mikel Arteta Current position: 1st
Arsenal appeared destined for their first league title in 22 years, but their nine-point lead has evaporated over the last three weeks.
April has proven to be a particularly cursed month for Arteta, since his arrival in 2019, he has lost 51 matches, nine of which occurred in April.
Despite fan frustration surrounding a potential third consecutive season without the league title, Crook notes: “I haven’t heard anything from the board about replacing him.
“However, fans are beginning to wonder if they need a different path.
“It would be a major disappointment if they finish the season trophyless after the promise of a quadruple.”
Aston Villa
Current manager: Unai Emery League position: 5th
The Spaniard has enjoyed another stellar season, reaching the Europa League semi-finals and challenging for Champions League football.
While a recent dip in form— Villa winning only three of their last ten matches — has caused anxiety, Crook believes Emery is firmly entrenched.
Crook confessed there was interest from other clubs: “Manchester United were certainly an admirer of him, but he has so much power at Villa that it would be hard for him to walk away and it might help keep players like Morgan Rogers at the club.
“They will be experiencing the same financial problems as Newcastle but they will be competing in the Champions League, it’s a huge money generator.”
Brentford
Current manager: Keith Andrews League position: 9th
After the departures of Thomas Frank and Bryan Mbeumo, many pundits predicted relegation for the Bees.
Keith Andrews has silenced critics, steering the team to within one point of European qualification.
However, Crook remains cautious, saying: “I think a struggle next season is on the cards and I could see the club fighting relegation but it remains an impressive recruitment model from Matthew Benham.”
Brighton
Current manager: Fabian Hurzeler League position: 6th
The 33-year-old became the youngest permanent head coach in Premier League history upon replacing De Zerbi in 2024.
While he has been linked with German club Bayer Leverkusen, Brighton are reportedly hopeful of retaining him with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2027.
Crook said: “I’m delighted for Hurzeler that he’s been able to turn it around. Brighton are going to have to make a decision soon if they want to extend his contract or not.”
Burnley
Current manager: Scott Parker League position: 19th
The Lancashire outfit will be in the Championship next season having had their Premier League relegation confirmed last week.
Steven Gerrard is a name in contention for the job, in addition to the Wales boss, Craig Bellamy.
Crook said: “Parker’s an interesting one because Burnley fans gave up on him a long time ago. They’ve been underwhelmed by what they’ve seen from Parker in the Premier League, similar to his previous clubs.
“But you would have thought, if they were going to have made a change they would have done it by now. If you are looking for a manager to get you out of the Championship, Parker has been there, done that and got the T-shirt.
“The one name I’ve heard a few times as a potential successor is Craig Bellamy. He won’t be going to the World Cup this summer now that Wales have lost their play-off game, he was highly regarded when he was a part of Vincent Kompany’s coaching staff.
“The club wanted to keep him when Kompany left for Bayern Munich so that’s more a question to Bellamy is how much he fancies a tilt at managing Wales at the home Euros and that might be an issue for Burnley.”
Chelsea
Current interim manager: Calum McFarlane League position: 8th
Chelsea’s situation is complex following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior just three months into a six-and-a-half-year contract last week.
“The final straw was the 3-0 defeat to Brighton,” said Crook.
“The board could feel the anger of the fans and we now know one player had a nickname for Rosenior, that he was labelled the ‘substitute teacher’.
“Clearly the players weren’t buying into his methods and while they didn’t want to make a second mid-season change, they felt it was best to ensure they reach the FA Cup final and secure some form of European football next season.
“In terms of a replacement, it is an open race. Iraola is a name I have heard, and he has said he would like to manage a London club in the past.
“Eddie Howe was mentioned but that was closed down quickly, it seems they want to go for experience rather than an untested manager and Iraola who has led a club like Bournemouth to historic European qualification would tick all the boxes.
Crystal Palace
Current manager: Oliver Glasner League position: 13th
The Austrian revealed he would leave the club in January after he said he felt ‘abandoned’ after the sale of Marc Guehi happened to Manchester City, behind his back.
Crook stated: “There’s been a little talk from fans that he might make a U-turn if he’s able to win the Conference League.
“I don’t think that will happen, that’s not the impression I’m getting. A couple of names for potential replacements would be Jose Bordalas at Getafe and Rayo Vallecano’s Inigo Perez, who was mentioned for the Bournemouth job.
“I think the plan at Palace is that they will announce his replacement before the Conference final, if they get there. Iraola has been mentioned as well but I think he would want a bigger club and elsewhere in Europe.”
Everton
Current manager: David Moyes League position: 11th
Despite a recent slump, Moyes has successfully transformed Everton from relegation fodder to European contenders.
“David Moyes will sign a new contact and rightly so,” said Crook.
Fulham
Current manager: Marco Silva League Position: 10th
The Portuguese manager has been at the helm since July 2021 and has been key in helping the west London club remain in the top flight.
But Silva’s contract expires at the end of the season, with Crook saying: “We ask him every year about his contract.
“It seems to be a continuous power play in order for him to get what he wants and to receive more transfer funds.
“If they don’t qualify for Europe, I could see this finally being the year he leaves and the job at Nottingham Forest would be appealing to him.”
Leeds United
Current manager: Daniel Farke League position: 15th
After reaching the FA Cup semi-final, and the team being six points clear of the relegation zone, Farke has solidified his position.
“There were question marks earlier in the season,” Crook noted. “But after a trip to Wembley, he is definitely safe.”
Liverpool
Current manager: Arne Slot League position: 4th
Over the last couple of months, there have been calls from Liverpool fans for Slot’s removal despite the Dutchman winning a league title just a year ago.
However, Crook insists the board will stick with Slot despite a tough season for the Reds that will end without a trophy after over ÂŁ400million spent during last summer’s transfer window.
“I can’t see his reign coming to an end yet, there isn’t an appetite at board level to make a change, particularly after looking like they will achieve Champions league qualification.
“I think they realise there have been a lot of mitigating factors this season, with the tragic passing of Diogo Jota in the summer and you can’t underestimate the impact that has had on the dressing room.
“Senior players have not hit the same standard of last season. Mohamed Salah is a prime example of that and they have been going through a transitional period.
“I expect Slot to stay which could upset a lot of Liverpool supporters but he has earned the right for more time after winning the title.”
Manchester City
Current manager: Pep Guardiola League position: 2nd
talkSPORT understands the club have formally asked the six-time Premier League-winning manager about his future intentions.
“I believe he’s had the look of a tired manager for years now, so if he goes I believe it will be Enzo Maresca to replace him on the throne.
“A lot of City fans want Vincent Kompany but he’s being smart about it and doesn’t want to be the successor to Pep Guardiola so he will stay at Bayern Munich.
Manchester United
Current manager: Michael Carrick League position: 3rd
Carrick has made compelling cases for the permanent managerial role, with victories over their European contenders City, Arenal, Chelsea and Villa.
Crook said: “You look at other options, Thomas Tuchel. He has extended is deal with England so that won’t happen, I think there’s a reluctance from the board to wait after the World Cup for managers like Mauricio Pochettino and Carlo Ancelotti.
“Julian Nagelsmann has got support in the hierarchy.
“You’ve also got options from home, Oliver Glasner and Marco Silva are not an upgrade on Carrick. I also love Iraola, but I don’t know if he has the personality to manage a club like Manchester United.
“I think once the top five is secured, the board will move quickly. I would be interested to see how long the deal would be but I think Carrick would at least want a two-year deal.”
Newcastle United
Current manager: Eddie Howe League position: 14th
Crook said: “I don’t think he will be sacked because he signed a long term contract which will be an expensive deal to remove him from.
“If he does leave Newcastle, which it looks the case, it’s far more likely he decides he has got the club as far as he can.
“Last summer, the hierarchy made it far too hard to bring new players in. It felt like they was panic buying with Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade. Neither was anywhere near the top of their list at the start of summer, as I understand.
“They are going to have to sell players again, especially with the interest from Bayern Munich and Arsenal for players like Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.”
Commenting on Xabi Alonso being a rumoured contender for the job, Crook said: “I don’t think Newcastle are ambitious enough for him. It seems the Saudis are not as committed as they was at the start of the project, partly due to PSR restraints.
Nottingham Forest
Current manager: Vitor Pereira League position: 16th
Pereira only got the job in February but his long-term future is uncertain, with links to Fulham boss Silva persisting.
Crook said: “I always felt if Marco Silva was to leave Fulham, I could see him at Forest. He has a good relationship with Evangelos Marinakis during his time at Olympiakos where they eventually won the league together.
“Pereira could go and win the Europa League but I’m not entirely sure he’s there for the long haul.”
Sunderland
Current manager: Regis Le Bris League position: 12th
The Black Cats have coped the best of the promoted teams having made a stunning start to season which saw them get into the top four.
Form faded in the second half of the season but Sunderland have survived with relative comfort. That may not be enough for the Frenchman, however.
Crook stated: “Keep an eye on Regis Le Bris, if they don’t qualify for Europe there’s been a couple of suggestions for me that maybe the hierarchy are considering a change at the end of the season.”
Tottenham Hotspur
Current manager: Roberto De Zerbi League position: 18th
Despite relegation fears, De Zerbi seems committed to the long haul, even if it is in the Championship.
On De Zerbi’s future, Crook said: “I think there would be a pay cut coming his way if they don’t stay up, but he said he was committed for the long haul and he signed a five-year contract.
“I think if they do go down, it won’t be De Zerbi’s fault or even Igor Tudor, it will be on the hierarchy for sticking with Thomas Frank for too long.
West Ham
Current manager: Nuno Espirito Santo League position: 17th
The Portuguese remains another manager in the relegation battle with the Hammers currently two points above the drop.
On Nuno’s situation with West Ham, Crook said: “In terms of Nuno, if they go down, there certainly will be conversations.
“Because the board will feel he’s had a majority of the season to save them so it’s not certain he will stay if they go down. If they do stay up, I think he will be fine.”
Wolves
Current manager: Rob Edwards League position: 20th
The ex-Luton boss is expected to stay on in the Championship, though fan patience is wearing thin amongst the fans.
On Edwards, Crook said: “I think he will certainly be sticking around in the Championship, when they appointed him they knew where the likely destination they would be next year.
“He’s had some high moments this season, with the games at Liverpool, Arsenal and Villa.
“But as a whole, it’s been a disappointing season and I think he has to hit the ground running, certainly in the eyes of the fans, patience is in short supply especially amongst Wolves fans.”
