The NFL world could be given the answer to what they have waited for all offseason.
Pittsburgh have once again waited on Aaron Rodgers this offseason, who is yet to decide whether he will return for the 2026 season.
But, the latest update does indicate that a decision is expected imminently.
The Steelers have placed a rare right-of-first-refusal tender on Rodgers, as the veteran quarterback looks to be edging towards an NFL return.
Schefter highlighted a note shared to NFL teams that the tender had been placed on the 42-year-old.
“UFA Aaron Rodgers, QB. California, received the UFA Tender from his Prior Club (Pittsburgh Steelers) and he remains eligible to sign with any club,” the note read.
“The Steelers will receive exclusive negotiating rights for Rodgers if he does not sign by July 22, 2026 or the first scheduled day of the first 2026 NFL training camp, whichever is later.
“If Rodgers signs with a New Club before the date, he would be a potential Compensatory Free Agent (CFA) lost by the Steelers and a potential CFA gained by the New Club if all other requirements are met under the Compensatory Draft System’s rules.”
Rodgers’ future has been up in the air for much of the offseason amid retirement speculation, but is now expected to return to the Steel City for a second season.
The right-of-first-refusal tender means he can accept a 10 percent raise off last year’s salary, which would pay him about $15 million this season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Pittsburgh also now will have the right to match any offer sheet he would sign with another team.
The Steelers mandatory training camp is set to begin on June 2, meaning Rodgers will follow a similar formula to last year.
Rodgers missed owner Art Rooney II’s ‘draft-day’ deadline, but they didn’t have to wait long before this news broke.
The fact they hadn’t heard likely played a role in Pittsburgh’s draft strategy, as they used their third-round pick on Drew Allar.
Allar will join Will Howard, Mason Rudolph and potentially Rodgers in a deep Steelers QB room for new head coach Mike McCarthy.
In four seasons suiting up for the Nittany Lions in the Big Ten, Allar made 45 appearances and completed 63.2 percent of his passes for 7,402 yards and 61 touchdowns to just 13 interceptions.
Allar and Howard are the likely candidates to take the reigns from Rodgers post the 2026-season, that is if he returns of course.
Rodgers proved age doesn’t matter in his 21st season in the league.
In 16 regular season games last season, Rodgers completed 65.7 of his pass attempts for 3,322 yards and 24 touchdowns to just seven interceptions,
He lead the Steelers to a 10-7 record and their first AFC North title since 2019, but their playoff run ended at the hands of the Houston Texans.
Rodgers potential return is also likely to be in a mentorship role to Howard and Allar behind him.
Schefter’s update is the biggest to date surrounding Rodgers and his NFL future.
But, it appears that one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time will be returning for another season, reuniting with his former Green Bay Packers head coach.
