Liam Rosenior is facing a fight to save his job in the wake of Chelsea’s dismal 3-0 defeat at Brighton.
talkSPORT understands the Chelsea leadership are discussing a plan of action after the Blues slumped to a fifth straight league defeat without scoring for the first time since 1912.
It is also understood several senior players have been left unimpressed by Rosenior’s tactics and training methods.
The Stamford Bridge hierarchy have backed Rosenior to this point and the plan has been to judge him after a full season in charge next term.
However their recent run of poor form coupled with anger from fans is believed to have left the former Strasbourg chief on a less stable footing.
News of Chelsea’s change in feelings towards Rosenior comes as Danny Murphy labelled the Blues boss’ position as untenable on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan.
“Unfortunately for him, I think it’s irreversible when the fans are singing what they are singing,” Murphy said.
Simon Jordan’s verdict on Rosenior’s outburst
Meanwhile, ex-Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan said he felt ‘pity’ for Rosenior – which has to be considered a ‘bad sign’.
“I felt he said too much last night,” Jordan added.
“I watched it thinking, ‘No, Liam.’ The journalists must be rubbing their hands. Not because they shouldn’t be, but because they got bolder and bolder and pushed him more and more. The more he said, the more forlorn he looked, the more lost he looked.
“If I was his owner, with respect, I’d have grabbed him before the interview. I’d have gone downstairs and said, ‘We saw what we saw, we’ll deal with that in a different conversation, but keep it on the up and up.’
“He probably needs a bit of guidance and counselling. I know he shouldn’t for this job because it’s a big job and there’s an element of the fact that if you put a guy into a job, he should be big enough to do it.
“But all of us have accepted that there is a learning curve that he’ll have to go through, that this job was always going to be him learning on the job. Chelsea were obviously prepared for that to be the case in this ownership model.
“In that circumstance, I think he needed a wise head, whether it’s a number two… a wise voice beside him saying, ‘Keep your head on.’
Jordan’s comments were in reference to Rosenior’s scathing review of his own side’s performance during the 3-0 loss to Brighton on Tuesday.
Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, a ‘numb’, ‘angry’ and ‘frustrated’ Rosenior labelled the display as ’embarrassing’ and apologised to the supporters who had travelled south.
Rosenior and Chelsea will need to quickly hit the reset button though as they face historic rivals Leeds in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday, with talkSPORT providing live commentary for the crunch clash.
Unlike the Blues, Leeds enter the contest on the back of a six-game unbeaten run across all competitions, including a gritty 2-1 victory over Manchester United.
Aside from the FA Cup, Chelsea’s nosediving results has left the club at serious risk of missing out on European football next season.
Tuesday’s defeat to Brighton helped the Seagulls leapfrog the Blues into sixth place.
Serious sporting and financial dilemma awaits
However, once this round of Premier League fixtures are complete, Rosenior’s side could find themselves as low as 11th.
Chelsea sit seventh on 48 points with 34 games played, meaning 11th-placed Sunderland, who boast 46 points, can nudge ahead of them, as can Brentford, Bournemouth and Everton, who are all sandwiched in-between.
Despite the sporting effects of not qualifying for the Champions League next season, let alone any European competition, it may be in Chelsea’s interest to spend a campaign away from the marquee tournament.
Football finance expert Stefan Borson explained to talkSPORT that Chelsea are under serious pressure from UEFA to meet the terms of their settlement regarding the balance of spending in line with sufficient revenue and player sales.
Borson even speculated that the pressure is so great, Chelsea could volunteer to take a one-year ban from European competition, especially if their Premier League finish is good enough only for the Conference League.
