Paul Scholes ‘can’t see a return’ for Marcus Rashford at Manchester United and has tipped Barcelona to sign him permanently.
The 28-year-old has impressed at Barca since joining on loan from the Red Devils last summer, and has openly admitted he is keen to stay beyond this season.
After falling out of favour at Old Trafford, Rashford has enjoyed a career resurgence in Spain, registering 14 goals and 14 assists.
The highlight of this came on Sunday, when he scored a brilliant free-kick as Barca beat Real Madrid 2-0 to clinch the LaLiga title.
After securing league glory, Rashford was asked about his future at the club, where he declared: “I don’t know. I’m not a magician but if I was, I would stay at Barcelona.”
The Englishman’s loan deal includes an option for the Spanish giants to sign him permanently for £26million in the summer.
However, recent reports have claimed this clause will not be triggered, after it was previously suggested Rashford was close to agreeing personal terms over a permanent switch.
While United plan to sell the academy graduate, Barca have seen their attempts to renegotiate his £26m fee rebuffed.
No way back
The uncertainty over Rashford’s future has sparked debate over whether he could ultimately return to Old Trafford next season, with interim boss Michael Carrick leaving the door open for a return.
However, Man United legend Paul Scholes believes this is nigh on impossible, who pointed to the England star’s messy exit from the club, which saw him frozen out under former boss Ruben Amorim.
Discussing Rashford’s options on Tuesday’s talkSPORT Breakfast, Scholes said: “I think his time’s done [at Man United].
“I saw his free kick the other night as well. It was brilliant. I don’t think he’s played a massive amount of games, but as you say, his numbers are quite good.
“When he was at Manchester United, I think he’d lost a bit of love for the club. He didn’t really want to be there. It looked like that to me at times.
“So I think for that relationship to be healed will be quite difficult.”
Scholes then tipped Barcelona to take up Rashford’s loan-to-buy clause, adding: “I’d expect him to stay at Barcelona, maybe for a cut price.
“I think someone was talking about £25-26 million. For a player of that quality, I think that’d be worth taking.”
Scholes: Rashford attitude ‘won’t wash’ at United
On a potential return to United, Scholes admitted he found this hard to picture, who claimed Rashford’s effort levels fell well short of the mark towards the end of his time at the club.
After rising through the youth ranks, the Englishman went on to made 426 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 138 goals and providing 79 assists.
However, Amorim’s appointment in November 2024 proved the start of his demise, as he fell down the pecking order.
Rashford ultimately spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, before making the move to Spain in the summer.
Scholes continued: “I just can’t see a return to Manchester United. He looked like he didn’t want to be there. He stopped working hard.
“He has the speed and the quality, but if you’re not willing to work hard… He almost became, not arrogant in a way, maybe he thought he was a little bit better than he was.
“He maybe went in the [Kylian] Mbappe, the Cristiano [Ronaldo], the [Lionel] Messi’s where you think, ‘I don’t have to work. I don’t have to work hard for my team. I’m just going to stay up here, take the ball, beat people and smash it in the top corner’.
“That at Manchester United, it won’t wash and it didn’t wash. I think people saw right through that.”
Roaring success in the summer?
Rashford’s increased playing time away from Man United has certainly benefitted his England career, having earned an international recall under Thomas Tuchel whilst at Aston Villa.
He has remained a regular fixture in the Three Lions since joining Barcelona, and Scholes has now tipped him to challenge for a starting berth on the left-wing at this summer’s World Cup.
Asked whether Rashford will start for England, the United great replied: “I think there’s every chance here on that left-hand side.
“There is some competition for that. I think Anthony Gordon’s one as well, he’s a good player. If England start with Marcus Rashford on that left-hand side, I’d be more than happy with that.
“He’s going to have to work in that team. I’ll give him that. He’s probably had to go to Barcelona and work as well. Although I haven’t seen loads of Barcelona, I’m pretty sure he’s not getting in Hansi Flick’s team.
“If he’s not putting a shift in, he’s going to have to with Thomas Tuchel, we all know the qualities he’s got. He will score goals, he will make goals.
“If he’s willing to put his work in, I’ve no doubt he’ll be a success for England this summer as well.”
