The long wait is over.
Oklahoma City have finally broken ground on the MAPS 4 Multipurpose Stadium, which will anchor a new sports and entertainment district that is south of Bricktown.
The process from planning and design, fielding donations for the land, and significant funding delays, has taken seven years to get to this point.
But it will take another two years to complete construction with an estimated open date of 2028 for the 10,000-capacity stadium that will house Oklahoma City’s new United Soccer League (USL) Championship club.
“[The] stadium groundbreaking reflects a city that is relentlessly investing in itself,” Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt said. “We are perhaps the only top 50 city to lack a multipurpose stadium, and it’s kept us from opportunities in soccer and music, as well as in minor league football, collegiate and high school sports.
“In 2019, we decided to address that need. And even before we broke ground, we were already seeing new opportunities present themselves.
“We are also seeing this project become a catalyst for the parcel around it, which promises to develop into a vibrant new mixed-use district in the heart of our city.
“This MAPS 4 project continues our city’s incredibly successful philosophy. When we invest in our city, we always reap rewards.”
With nine acres of land to work with, thanks to a donation to the City by multi-strategy investment firm Echo Investment Capital, the vision is to have the stadium serve as the focal point of a new sports and entertainment district, offering a hub for those in the local community.
“This stadium will serve as far more than a sports and entertainment venue; it will be a community hub and a catalyst for a bold new cultural district in downtown Oklahoma City,”Christian Kanady, founder and CEO of Echo Investment Capital stated.
“As the future home of our professional soccer club, it will also host concerts, events, and gatherings that bring people together and deliver on our promise to create meaningful experiences for our fans, partners, and community.
“This project reflects Oklahoma City’s continued investment and its future, and we’re proud to partner with the City of Oklahoma City on such a transformational vision.”
The pitch has already been approved by the United States Soccer Federation, in which the majority of the seating being under canopy cover.
It is now projected to cost $121 million, a significant increase from the originally proposed cost of $41 million a few years ago.
NBA star part of investment group
Echo are also the majority owner of Oklahoma City’s men’s and women’s professional soccer clubs – yet to be named – with Goldfinger band member Nick Gross and NBA star Russell Westbrook having partnered with the firm to help pour $1 billion into the project.
Former MVP Westbrook has close ties to Oklahoma City having spent 11 years of his professional basketball career with the Thunder – who are also in the process of building a brand new state-of-the-art arena within walking distance.
“My time with the OKC Thunder shaped so much of who I am, so becoming Christian’s partner and investing in the city’s continued growth is not only exciting personally, but Echo’s Sports and Entertainment vertical is unlike anything else I’ve seen in the space,” Westbrook said back in 2024.
“The opportunity to collaborate on a shared vision—combining the long-term, purpose-driven work I’m developing at RWE with what Christian is building at Echo and Connective Capital—is something I’m incredibly proud to bring to my entire platform.”
Due to the Thunder’s recent success in the NBA having formed a superteam fronted by back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, those in and around Oklahoma City hold the strong belief that the market has grown exponentially, which they need to capitalize on.
“Venues are everything in sports,” Jeremy Alumbaugh, President of USL Championship, said.  “OKC is a booming market. It’s an emerging market. It was strong when we had the club here before, and now we’re just going to build into that next phase.”
The multipurpose venue will also host OKC’s newly-announced United Football League (UFL) franchise, outdoor concerts and will also serve as the home of the city’s school sporting events.
“The MAPS 4 Multipurpose Stadium is an investment in the future of Oklahoma City and the talent pipeline for our youth,” Oklahoma City Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jamie C. Polk said. “
This world-class venue will bring our community together while giving students a place to compete, perform, celebrate graduation, and dream bigger about their future right here at home.”
