Aston Villa and Newcastle could step up their efforts to lure German whizz kid Said El Mala to the Premier League this summer.
The 19-year-old midfielder appeared set for a move to Brighton but the Seagulls saw two January bids worth £24 and £27million rebuffed by Bundesliga side FC Köln (Cologne).
Brighton reportedly upped their offer to £30m in late February with plans to also sign his brother Malek, only to see the German outfit resist another approach.
Reports in Germany now claim that Brighton have pulled out of the running to sign the talented teenager with Köln having slapped a £43m price tag on him.
A bright future
El Mala has impressed for his club this season and recently opened his account for Germany under-21s.
There are high hopes for El Mala with some already likening him to Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz.
And that has put him firmly in the shop window with Aston Villa and Newcastle showing their interest in the rising star.
European football expert Andy Brassell believes a lack of clarity over the future of Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler may have impacted the deal.
“I think there are a couple of sides to it. The fact that El Mala and his brother made an agreement in principle, but it’s not gone any further than that, I think is an issue,” Brassell told talkSPORT.com.
“I think something probably could have been fleshed out at a compromised figure. But the big question for El Mala is will Fabian Hurzeler be there next year?
“If Hurzeler is there I think he’s straight there, but without the guarantee, they didn’t want to put the ink on the paper. That’s fair enough.
“I think when you look at the fact that he’s 19 years old, the potential is clear. He’s got a really high ceiling and he was a pest again against Leverkusen at the weekend missed a really great chance where he rounded the goalkeeper Janis Blasic and hit the post.
“But you know, he’s a guy who takes responsibility in big moments already.”
Ready made for the Premier League?
Despite having played just 33 times for Köln in what has been his breakout season, El Mala has been among the club’s brightest talents.
He has scored 11 goals and registered five assists in 31 Bundesliga outings and although his top-level experience is limited, Brassell believes the midfielder has what it takes to make a splash in English football.
“I think you’re looking at a player who could have a really good first season in the Premier League,” he added.
“He could be effective from the get-go, so I think if you’re looking at Chelsea and the fact they have a lot of wide players who have been largely ineffective this season, I think that that would be an interesting fit.
“Whether you think that’s the place for a player to develop and again, there’s a question over who the coaches are.
“I think that those are reasonable questions to ask, how he’s different from the other players that there already is.
“He’s direct, he’ll score. He’s someone who can play as a winger and as a wide forward. So I think that is really all part of what makes him so exciting.
“Clearly I think he would be an interesting replacement for Anthony Gordon at Newcastle if they were to let him go.
“I don’t think Aston Villa are going to continue with Jaden Sancho.
“So he’s a different type of wide player but similar coming in from the left-hand side and again, I think the idea of developing under Unai Emery would be really great.
“But just because Brighton have stepped back from for the moment I’m not convinced it’s necessarily over. I’m not convinced that’s necessarily off the table, but I’m pretty sure he’ll end up in the Premier League.”
