Naoya Inoue’s father-trainer, Shingo Inoue, would like to see his son hang up his gloves after his statement-making victory over Junto Nakatani.
‘The Monster’ overcame Nakatani via unanimous decision earlier this month to retain his undisputed super bantamweight crown for a seventh time in front of a sold-out Tokyo Dome.
Inoue-Nakatani shattered the record for the highest revenue in Japanese combat sports history, surpassing the 5 billion yen (ÂŁ23.5m) grossed by the 2022 kickboxing grudge match between Tenshin Nasukawa and Takeru Segawa.
The event was a global spectacle with fans from all around the world tuning in to see the two pound-for-pound stars lock horns on DAZN.
And Shingo believes it is the perfect send-off for one of the greatest pugilists to ever grace the ring.
“How many more fights does he need to have? It’s about time he retire [sic] already,” Shingo told Yahoo! Japan News.
“He can walk away cleanly while he’s still a legend and at his best.
“I haven’t talked to him directly about it, but honestly, how many more fights does he need?
“It’s enough already. He can retire suddenly while still a legend and while he’s still great.”
The Japanese superstar has already won world titles in four separate weight classes, including undisputed reigns at bantamweight and super bantamweight.
There had been discussions about Inoue jumping up to featherweight to challenge at a fifth weight.
However, the conversations have quickly switched to a super fight with Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez.
Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh is targeting the fight for January in Japan.
It would require Rodriguez, who currently holds the WBA, WBC and WBO super flyweight titles, to bulk up to 122lbs.
‘Bam’ is due to make his bantamweight debut against Antonio Vargas on June 13 for the WBA’s version of the 118lbs world title.
Both he and Inoue have expressed a desire to square off thereafter.
Rodriguez said: “If that fight was presented to me right now, I’d definitely go ahead and take it.”
Inoue added: “When he’s ready, [we] can fight at junior-featherweight [super-bantamweight], and [if] the timing is perfect for each other, I would love for him to wait to challenge me.”
