The biggest fight in Japanese boxing history lived up to its billing.
Naoya Inoue’s enthralling unanimous decision victory over Junto Nakatani last weekend has reportedly generated the highest revenue in Japanese combat sports history.
According to Yahoo Japan, the undisputed super bantamweight title fight surpassed the 5 billion yen (£23.5m) grossed by the 2022 kickboxing grudge match between Tenshin Nasukawa and Takeru Segawa.
Inoue and Nakatani sold out the 55,000-seater Tokyo Dome, with ticket prices ranging from 11,000 yen (£51) up to 330,000 yen (£1,545).
Japanese on-demand streaming service Lemino sold PPVs for 6,050 yen (£28.25) for advance purchases and 7,150 yen (£33.48) for same-day purchases.
ESPN Knockout’s Julius Julianis reports that by Thursday, Lemino had already shifted 500,000 buys.
The boxing insider estimates that by Saturday, that number will have climbed to 800,000.
By adding in the broadcasting rights fees, merchandise sales and ticket prices for the live viewings held in 116 cinemas in Japan, Inoue-Nakatani is expected to be worth around 10 billion yen (£47m).
Inoue’s next fight
Inoue is now being lined up for another lucrative showdown with super flyweight king Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez.
Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh is aiming to make an offer for the bout to take place in January in Japan.
Rodriguez is set to make his 118lbs debut on June 13 against Antonio Vargas for the WBA bantamweight title.
He currently holds the WBC, WBO, and WBA super flyweight belts, and had considered jumping back down to 115lbs to face IBF champion Willibaldo Garcia in an undisputed fight.
However, a blockbuster showdown with Inoue would more than likely take precedent, especially with the money that will be put up by the Saudis.
Inoue and Rodriguez are open to the challenge
Both Rodriguez and Inoue have previously welcomed a fight with each other.
Speaking to Ring Magazine last month, Rodriguez said: “If that fight was presented to me now, I’d definitely go and take it.
“I think me against Inoue would definitely be one of the biggest fights in the lower weight divisions.
“I love going to Japan anyway, so if I were to fight out there for the first time, that would be great.”
Inoue has also said of a matchup with Rodriguez: “When he’s ready, [we] can fight at junior-featherweight [super-bantamweight], and [if] the timing is perfect for each other, I would love for him to wait to challenge me.”
