Mike Vrabel dropped a bombshell announcement on the eve of the 2026 NFL Draft.
The New England Patriots head coach has been at the center of a media storm after photographs of him and Dianna Russini, former NFL reporter for The Athletic, were published.
The images, which went viral, depicted the pair holding hands and embracing, with both married to other people.
Although they each downplayed the photos first revealed by Page Six, Russini later resigned from her role with The Athletic on April 14.
New photos of the two having breakfast together in Arizona last month have since surfaced online.
On Wednesday, Vrabel called a press conference in which he revealed that he had held “some difficult conversations” with his family, and the players and coaches on the Patriots which “have been positive and productive.”
But he also revealed that he would be seeking counseling, and as such, will not be with the team for day three of the NFL Draft on Saturday.
“As I said the other day, I promised my family, this organization and this team that I was going to give them the best version of me that I can possibly give them,” Vrabel said Wednesday night, via ESPN.
“In order to do so, I have committed to seeking counseling, starting this weekend. This is something that I have given a lot of thought to and is something I would advise a player to do if I was counseling them.
“I have always wanted to lead by example, and I believe this is what I have to do to be the best husband, father and coach that I possibly can be.
“This is not an easy thing for me to admit, but it is one that I know will make me a better person. I appreciate the support that everyone has given me and promise a stronger resolve as a result.”
Vrabel instead plans to be with his family this weekend outside of Massachusetts, but has said that he will still be in contact with the Patriots on Saturday as they make their final draft selections.
Did the Patriots use a ‘crisis communications expert’?
The manner in which Vrabel appeared at the podium was odd, because the Patriots had initially announced that two players would be made available for questions, not Vrabel.
The local media who were at the team’s facility were then given just five minutes notice that Vrabel would be appearing instead, in a stunning move which benefitted him and the team.
“The approach ensured that the press room wouldn’t be swarmed by reporters who don’t regularly cover the team—reporters who would have no qualms about attempting to pepper Vrabel with questions after he made a statement that lasted a little longer than two minutes,” Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio wrote.
This led some to believe that the Patriots had perhaps used an exterior communications firms to manage their response – something they vehemently denied.
“Neither Robert Kraft nor the New England Patriots have hired any external ‘crisis communications experts,’” Stacey James, longtime team spokesperson, told Front Office Sports.
Per FOS’s report, James refused to directly answer questions about a report from the weekend that suggested that Patriots owner Kraft “had his honchos pressure the Post before they published and tried to kill the story” and “a notorious crisis strategist made the call but was unsuccessful in neutering the story.”
However, she did repeatedly say that “Robert Kraft does not employ any external “crisis strategists” and that the Patriots are not working with “any external PR strategists.”
But Mike ‘The Reputation Doctor’ Paul is of the belief that Vrabel’s statement was “definitely scripted.”
“A true apology has no ifs or buts and has a full repentant heart. It’s more about heart work than head work to win back the ultimate currency: trust,” Paul said, via FOS.
“However, in sports some fans ultimately will divide his personal sexual situation from his coaching ability this season. If he wins, they will forget soon. If he loses, they will say maybe he could coach better if he keeps his pants on.”
