Mike Tomlin looks set to head to NBC and Football Night in America.
Tomlin stepped down from his role as the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach after 19 seasons, following the team’s playoff exit in the 2025 NFL season.
The 54-year-old was quickly touted to enter the world of sports media due to his charismatic personality and unique expertise on the X’s and O’s of football.
At the back end of March, these rumors were fueled further when it was revealed that he had signed with leading sports media agent Sandy Montag’s agency.
On Tuesday, via The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, it was reported that the Super Bowl-winning Steelers coach would be joining NBC’s Football Night in America – the network’s marquee pre-game show – as a top studio analyst.
He is expected to join host Maria Taylor, ex-Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and three-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots, Devin McCourty in the studio, though the latter has yet to re-sign to the network.
Furthermore, insider Mike Florio has since confirmed that he will be back for a 17th season, while Matthew Berry who is the show’s fantasy football contributor is also expected to return.
The futures of Rodney Harrison, Jac Collinsworth and Chris Simms, though, are currently in a limbo as NBC’s long-term strategy appears to be geared toward attracting current-day star power, albeit with fewer personnel on the show.
NBC fended off interest from Fox Sports to land Tomlin, with the network having decided to undergo a huge personnel shakeup, which saw veteran Tony Dungy dismissed after 17 seasons.
Following the beloved Dungy’s abrupt exit, the 70-year-old released a statement on social media which read: “I have been informed by NBC that I won’t be back with FNIA this fall and it has given me time to reflect and also to look ahead.Â
“It’s disappointing news but I want to thank my NBC family for making the last 17 years so special.  I’ll have lasting memories of my time there, especially with Rodney Harrison who has become a tremendous friend.
“God has always directed me in these moments and while I’m not sure what the next step will be for me—whether it will be in football, in broadcasting, or getting more involved in church and community outreach —I know God has plans for my life and I can’t wait see them unfold.
“And I am reminded of one of my favorite verses in the Bible-Romans 8:28. “God works all things for His good for those who love the Lord.”“
NBC win the Tomlin sweepstakes
At one point, Fox were deemed the favorites to land Tomlin due to his close relationship with Jay Glazer, as well as their vacancy having yet to replace Hall of Fame coach-turned-analyst Jimmy Johnson following the 82-year-old’s retirement back in March 2025.
However the Tomlin sweepstakes took a little bit of hit as a result of the NFL’s aggressive pursuit of wanting to renegotiate its 11-year, $110-plus billion settlements with TV rights holders.
As such, this has perhaps contributed to networks’ decisions – or lack thereof – of pursuing top talent and personalities due to the inevitable price tags that they come attached with.
These hesitancies from elsewhere played right into the hands of NBC, who have been yearning for their next star and Tomlin has the potential to become exactly that – blockbuster.
In his near-two decade career at the helm of one of the NFL’s most storied franchises, Tomlin never once recorded a losing season, in which he reached the playoffs 13 times.
After winning the Super Bowl against the Arizona Cardinals in 2009 at the age of just 36, the Black and Gold’s success tapered off as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger entered his twilight years before retiring in 2022.
With the franchise having since been unable to find a long-term replacement under center since, having future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers for what may yet turn out to be just a one-year rental – Tomlin lost his last seven postseason games before walking away.
“It’s often said we’re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time, like you have to choose,” Tomlin said back in March of his time in the state of Pennsylvania.
“And I think our experience here in Pittsburgh and with the great Steelers organization exemplifies that — we were here for a long and really good time.”
With NBC recording the highest viewership ratings among their competitors last season, the network will be hoping to cement their position at the top of the charts with the addition of a figure with the gravitas of Tomlin.
