World Cup countdown is on for USA and Brazil
With the official countdown clock for the 2026 FIFA World Cup down to 42 days, a breakthrough years in the making is almost here for a talent management agency that was founded by rapper and media mogul Jay-Z.
“It goes without saying that this World Cup arguably will be the biggest sporting event in the history of sport,” Michael Yormark, president of Roc Nation Sports, exclusively told talkSPORT on Thursday.
“You think about three continents. You think about 48 teams — international teams. It’s the biggest World Cup, right? You think about 104 matches.
“I’ve heard the (FIFA) president Gianni Infantino say it’s 104 Super Bowls. And so when you think about that in that context, it’s going to be amazing.
“We’ll have anywhere between 10 to 16 athletes, clients in the World Cup representing multiple countries. It’s a huge moment. It’s a huge platform. And it’s a huge opportunity for them as it relates to their own brand building.”
Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid, Brazil) and Chris Richards (Crystal Palace, USA) highlight the Roc Nation athletes aiming for World Cup glory in an expanded tournament that is expected to take over the United States in June and July.
Yormark said the agency has at least 30 commercial partnerships for players that will be in the World Cup, with brands securing deals to use the athletes’ marketing power as an entry point to a tournament that will bounce from Mexico City and Toronto, Canada to Seattle, New York/New Jersey and Dallas in the USA.
Vinicius Junior ‘very active’ with World Cup promotions
“We’ve been very, very fortunate,” Yormark said.
“When you have high profile players — obviously we represent quite a few players on Brazil, led by Vinicius Junior. He’s been very active. He’s got incredible partners for the World Cup
“We’ve got Chris Richards, who we call Captain America, and Chris has benefited from this moment.”
Thirty-two years after a USA-hosted World Cup led to the creation of MLS, Yormark witnessed the newest high for American soccer by taking in Inter Miami’s state-of-the-art Nu Stadium in person.
While Lionel Messi (Argentina) stands near the top of the Eastern Conference in MLS, one of the biggest names in the international football world now plays his club games inside a 26,700-capacity venue that features a Leo Messi stand and is the centerpiece of a 131-acre entertainment district.
Messi’s new stadium in Miami was ‘incredible’
“It is one of the finest stadiums I’ve ever been in. I mean, incredible,” Yormark said.
“I give a lot of credit to the Mas family and David Beckham and everybody involved in that organization. To have the vision that they had and to be able to execute that vision and bring it to life is absolutely incredible.
“I’ve told people ever since I left that stadium that night, which was this past Saturday, that it is truly one of the best stadiums in the world.
“From a sightline perspective, from the overall footprint of the building — to all the hospitality areas, to the finishings, to the service levels within the building — absolutely incredible.”
Yormark’s unique sports background has crossed oceans and continents.
He started in corporate sponsorship sales with the New York Yankees and spent seven years as president of the NHL’s Florida Panthers.
Yormark linked to Miami Hurricanes AD gig
Yormark has recently been linked to the Miami Hurricanes athletic director job.
Dan Radakovich will be retiring as Miami AD on June 1.
“Thank you for everything, Dan!” the Hurricanes tweeted.
“From a CFP National Championship appearance to record-breaking GPAs and a 94% graduation rate, he’s leaving The U having made a tremendous impact.”
Yormark declined to comment when asked about Miami’s AD position.
Countdown to the World Cup
For Vinicius Junior, Richards and soccer fans from New York to Los Angeles, the 2026 World Cup is almost here.
It will likely take a strong run from Mauricio Pochettino’s USMNT squad for the beautiful game to maintain its summer surge in the United States.
“Obviously winning the World Cup would be a dream of mine. And what better time to do it on home soil?” Richards exclusively told talkSPORT in March.
“I can’t even begin to describe what it’s going to be like. I’m just super excited for the moment.”
But the biggest — and most expensive — World Cup in history will be must-watch TV across the globe, no matter how far USMNT goes.
Yan Diomande set to represent Ivory Coast
“We’ve got a lot of players that we wan to support,” Yormark said.
“Obviously, Vini and all of our players on Team Brazil. We signed Yan Diomande, who’s just having a spectacular year at (RB) Leipzig, and he plays in Philadelphia to start the World Cup.
“It’s a big moment for our players. But it’s also a big moment for Roc Nation Sports International, because when you think about having 10 to 16 players in the World Cup — based on where we came from and where we started — it’s a great achievement for us, as well.”
