Gimenez lay stricken on the sideline for the closing stages before being helped off the pitch by coaching staff at full-time.
Mexico boss Javier Aguirre later confirmed he had been taken to hospital.
He told reporters: “We need to check Santi because he is at the hospital right now.”
Gimenez was not the only player to suffer a freak injury during the closing stages of the match.
Jordan Henderson had to be stretchered away after falling when attempting to hurdle the advertising hoardings at full-time.
The England midfielder had been an unused substitute for the Three Lions.
Gimenez had made four substitute appearances without scoring during Mexico’s run to the last 16.

However, they now bow out after Jude Bellingham inspired England to victory in Mexico City.
His brace was followed by Harry Kane’s second half penalty to see Thomas Tuchel’s side into the last eight.
It came despite Jarell Quansah’s red card forcing the Three Lions to play more than half an hour with 10 men.
Mexico had twice reduced the deficit through Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez but were unable to find an equaliser.
England are now set to take on Norway for a place in the semi-finals on Saturday.
