Manchester United are reportedly preparing a bid for a budding Brazilian talent, yet there’s one major issue.
According to the Daily Mail, the Red Devils are formalising efforts to sign 16-year-old Palmeiras winger Eduardo Conceicao.
However, the youngster is yet to register a single appearance for Palmeiras’ first team.
Instead, Conceicao has quickly earned admirers from across Europe thanks to impressive displays for Palmeiras’ Under-20s as well as Brazil’s Under-17s.
The 16-year-old has scored twice in five appearances for Brazil’s U17s while he has chalked up eight goal contributions from 13 games across all competitions with Palmeiras’ U20s.
How much is Eduardo Conceicao expected to go for?
Given the potential gem on their hands coupled with heavy interest from some European heavyweights, Palmeiras are intent on driving a hard price for Conceicao.
It’s why the Daily Mail reports United are readying a bid of up to £34million, with bonuses yet to be determined.
However, the Red Devils are expected to face competition for the 16-year-old talent, with Manchester City and Barcelona also reported to be heavily interested in Conceicao.
Regardless of whether United push a deal through, South American football expert Tim Vickery expressed fears whether spending so much on, at least at this stage, an unproven talent, is a wise move.
Tim Vickery’s verdict on United’s interest in Conceicao
When asked on talkSPORT’s Hawksbee and Jacobs if Conceicao was worth the money and what he knew about him, Vickery bluntly replied: “Very little, because he’s not a first team player.
“This is really ripping him out the womb.
“For every Estevao, there is a Luis Guilherme. West Ham spent a fortune on him, couldn’t use him, went to Sporting and didn’t even see him on the bench against Arsenal.”
As Vickery outlined, Guilherme is a cautionary tale for burgeoning Brazilian talents receiving their big move when they are not ready.
The 20-year-old moved from Palmeiras to West Ham in June 2024 for just over £25m in what was then-Hammers boss Julen Lopetegui‘s first signing.
However, Guilherme, a winger, failed to make an impact in east London as he was shipped off to Sporting Lisbon in January without scoring in any of his 18 appearances for West Ham.
Dangers of ‘premature move’ laid bare
Given how poorly Guilherme’s English adventure turned out, Vickery believes players need to be wary of going down a similar path.
“As a general rule, I’m very, very concerned by the premature move,” Vickery said.
“I think more careers get lost as a consequence of the premature move.
“Some are boosted by it. How many are Estevao? Not many.”
Like Vickery hinted, Estevao may be more of an exception rather than the rule.
Chelsea struck a deal with Palmeiras to sign Estevao in June 2024, with the fee reaching up to £56m, but had to wait until last summer before he was officially a Blue.
It hasn’t taken long for Estevao to win over Chelsea supporters thanks to his history-making feats and fleet-footed dribbling which has helped the teen chalk up 12 goal contributions across all competitions.
Unfortunately it appears the 18-year-old’s season may be done given he sustained a hamstring injury during Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Manchester United last weekend.
