Liverpool took a giant step towards next season’s Champions League last weekend – and they did it in the most satisfying way imaginable.

A 2-1 victory over Everton was secured courtesy of a last-gasp goal from Virgil van Dijk, who rose highest to nod home from a corner in front of the home fans at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Liverpool now require three wins from their final five matches to guarantee a top-five finish, although in the end they might not even need that many.

Ending the season trophyless is a disappointment, of course, particularly given how high their hopes were last summer.

But Champions League qualification would prevent this being a disastrous campaign, and it would probably keep Arne Slot in the job too.

Crystal Palace are Liverpool’s opponents this weekend. The south Londoners are one of several sides in the mix for a top-eight finish and European football, although their priority is the Conference League.

With the first leg of Palace’s semi-final against Shakhtar Donetsk scheduled for Thursday, Liverpool will hope Oliver Glasner’s side are distracted here.

That will not necessarily be the case, though. Palace will want to head into that meeting with Shakhtar on the back of a positive result at Anfield, a ground on which they have a decent record over the last few years.

Liverpool fans will hope their team has turned a corner after back-to-back league wins in April, but there have been numerous false dawns this season.

However, Liverpool may feel freer now they have one foot in the Champions League.

Liverpool could stumble at home

Crystal Palace won 3-0 at Anfield earlier in the season, capitalising on Liverpool’s poor form in the autumn to triumph in comprehensive fashion in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

They also beat the Reds at Selhurst Park in the reverse league fixture, as well as losing to them on penalties in the Community Shield back in August.

Palace have had Liverpool’s number in recent times, then, and we would not be surprised to see them get something here.

Arne Slot’s side have struggled to break down teams that cede possession this term, while Palace are well suited to absorbing pressure and hitting opponents on the break. 

Liverpool may have to settle for a point this weekend.

Attacks or defences?

Liverpool have scored in 12 consecutive Premier League matches. You have to go back to January 8 and a 0-0 draw with Arsenal to find the last time they drew a blank in the top flight.

That is not to say their attack has been functioning perfectly. They failed to score against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League (twice) and Manchester City in the FA Cup just this month.

We do expect them to find the back of the net against Crystal Palace, but Glasner will like his team’s chances of striking at the other end.

After all, Palace have breached the opposition’s backline in each of their last nine matches on their travels.

Salah eyes super send-off

Van Dijk was the matchwinner against Everton, but Mohamed Salah also made the net bulge against Liverpool’s crosscity rivals.

After Saturday’s showdown with Crystal Palace, Salah only has two Anfield outings remaining before he bids farewell to the club he has served with distinction since 2017.

Salah has found himself out of the team at points this season, but after scoring in Liverpool’s last two league matches, he has earned a place in the XI for the visit of Palace next up.

It has been obvious throughout 2025/26 that Salah is past his peak, but that does not mean he is incapable of producing flashes of quality, one of which could see him score on Saturday afternoon.
