Kylian Mbappe could be about to send shockwaves through football, but not because of his remarkable ability on the pitch.
Instead, the Real Madrid superstar stands a chance of shaking up the football boot market forever.
Mbappe has been with Nike since he was just eight years old and was in their star-studded World Cup advertisement, but that lengthy partnership may be nearing its conclusion.
His contract with the sportswear giant ends on July 31 this year and hasn’t exactly shown a keenness to extend it.
Surprise entrant in race to sign Mbappe?
With Mbappe soon to be a free agent, it’s set to spark a furious frenzy from rival brands desperate to secure his services for the future.
However, speaking on talkSPORT’s Trans Euro Express, Andy Brassell believes Mbappe could go down a completely alternative route and follow the path of a global sporting icon.
“The boot thing is quite interesting,” Brassell said.
“His deal is up for renewal. They (Nike) think it’s 50-50 whether they’ll get him again, which is not a particularly optimistic projection for someone they’ve had a close relationship with for a very long time, since he was a kid.
“He’s speaking to a brand apparently that doesn’t currently make football boots. So whether that’s a fashion brand or whatever, we don’t know.
“But he might want to create, like Michael Jordan did all those years ago, his own little off-shoot.”

During Jordan’s rookie year with the Chicago Bulls, a string of major sportswear giants wanted to partner with him for a shoe deal, including adidas, Nike and Converse.
It was Nike who succeeded in landing a shoe deal with Jordan, but rather than get him to wear shoes with their legendary design, they gave the hooper his own shoe line complete with a unique logo.
Often referred to as the ‘Jumpman’ logo, it features a silhouette of Jordan jumping with a ball in his left hand.
The Jordan brand has since developed into one that reaches far beyond basketball having featured on various Paris Saint-Germain playing kits and apparel in recent years.
Such is the financial power of the Jordan brand, sports business writer Joe Pompliano said in 2022 that it generated $5billion (£3.75bn) in annual revenue.
With Jordan’s estimated personal net worth sitting at over $4bn, Mbappe may be tempted to go down a similar path should it present itself.
Mbappe also wouldn’t be the first French star in recent times to roll the dice on a sportswear deal.
Antoine Griezmann ended his 14-year partnership with Puma to link forces with French all-sports brand Decathlon in January 2025.
The 35-year-old is Decathlon’s global ambassador for their Kipsta line, which includes boots.
However, Griezmann won’t be sporting the Kipsta boots at this year’s World Cup for France having retired from international football in September 2024.
