Tickets have flown off the shelves for Katie Taylor’s last dance.
The Irish icon bids farewell to boxing on September 5 in a four-belt shoot-out with unbeaten Frenchwoman Flora Pili at Dublin’s iconic 82,000-seater stadium, Croke Park.
It marks the first time since Muhammad Ali’s stoppage victory over Al Lewis in July 1972 that a boxing event has been hosted at the home of the Gaelic Games.
Fans are set to turn out in their droves to drink in the spectacle.
According to Taylor’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, 40,000 pre-sale tickets were sold earlier in the week.
And when tickets went on general sale on Friday at 9am, they were gone within 30 minutes.
Taylor left overwhelmed
Reacting to the remarkably quick sell-out, Taylor took to social media to write: “Honestly, I’m overwhelmed by your support, Ireland.
“What can I say but thank you, thank you, and thank you.
“I’ll do my utmost to put on one last big performance for you on Sept 5th.
“We’ll light Croker up together!”
Taylor has achieved everything there is to achieve in boxing.
From Olympic gold in the unpaid ranks to undisputed supremacy at both lightweight and super lightweight in the pros.
Katie Taylor’s career achievements
Amateur career
2012 Olympic gold medallist
Five-time World Championship gold medallist
Six-time European Championship gold medallist
Professional career
Undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO lightweight world champion
Undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO super lightweight world champion
A convincing trilogy victory over long-time rival Amanda Serrano last July seemed like the perfect send-off.
And when she relinquished her WBC super lightweight crown to take a step back from the sport, many anticipated it would be the end.
However, the 39-year-old had something far bigger up her sleeve.
Since turning over as a professional all the way back in 2016, Taylor has dreamed of headlining Croke Park.
She topped Dublin’s 3Arena for a pair of bouts with Chantelle Cameron in 2023, but the big one always evaded her due to the staggering operational and security expenses.
That all changed earlier this month when Taylor’s handlers finally granted her wish after a tireless effort behind the scenes.
A dream come true
“We did it, we’ve actually brought boxing back to Croke Park,” an emotional Taylor said at the launch press conference.
“This was on my career bucket list, especially these last couple of months, but this was beyond my wildest dreams. We’re actually here, we got it over the line.
“This was really an impossible dream a few years ago, but here we are.
“I have goosebumps. I actually can’t believe I’m in this position right now.
“This is going to be the most iconic moment of my whole career.
“I have a chance to fight in a packed house stadium at Croke Park, our most iconic venue. It’s the cathedral of Irish sport, really.”
