After stunning Ilia Topuria on the South Lawn of the White House over the weekend, Justin Gaethje remained coy on his next steps.
“I promised my mum I wouldn’t make a decision tonight,” Gaethje told Joe Rogan when pressed on whether he would compete again.
In the lead-up to fight night, Gaethje had teased the possibility of hanging up his gloves if he were to win the lightweight title at the third time of asking.
And so when he retired a battered and bruised Topuria on his stool at the end of the fourth round, many anticipated that it would be his final action in the Octagon.
A week removed from his unrelenting display, however, Gaethje insists that his fighting ambitions remain intact.
“Right now, I’m planning on it [fighting again],” Gaethje said during an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience.
“There’s not something natural in me that feels like it’s over.”
Justin Gaethje rules out Ilia Topuria rematch
Gaethje stopped short of picking a specific name for his first defence, but he does know that he isn’t interested in an immediate rematch with Topuria.
“He doesn’t get a rematch. He can try, but he doesn’t get one,” Gaethje added.
“He quit on the stool. He quit twice.
“I stopped him twice. What else do I have to f***ing do? His next challenge can’t be me.
“He needs to fight Paddy [Pimblett] or someone like that.”
Who could Justin Gaethje fight next?
It seems unlikely that Gaethje and Topuria’s timelines would line up for an immediate rematch anyway.
The Georgian is currently ruled out for an extended period with non-displaced fractures in both orbital bones.
At present, the next highest-ranked contender behind Topuria is No. 2-rated Armenian Arman Tsarukyan.
The 29-year-old had a title shot lined up at UFC 311 in January 2025 with then-155lbs champion Islam Makhachev.
However, Tsarukyan withdrew from the fight due to injury.
He subsequently made weight as the backup fighter for a vacant world title fight between Topuria and Charles Oliveira in June and went on to overcome Dan Hooker in November.
While Tsarukyan is the most deserving contender to Gaethje’s throne, his strained relationship with Dana White may throw a spanner in the works.
