Jordan Henderson has been rushed to hospital after suffering an arm injury during England’s celebrations after beating Mexico.
The veteran midfielder fell over the hoardings and injured his wrist, exiting the pitch on a stretcher with oxygen before going straight to hospital.
Thomas Tuchel’s side incredibly held on to beat the co-hosts 3-2 at the Azteca Stadium in the early hours of Monday morning.
And they celebrated in style, singing with the supporters in front of the stand behind the goal.
However, after singing ‘Wonderwall’ and other England anthems, disaster struck as Henderson took a tumble.
He was seen tripping over the hoardings as he looked to re-enter the pitch, before being surrounded by his teammates.
Dan Burn was the first to get to Henderson, who stayed down and looked in a lot of pain after falling over.
Burn waved his arms, asking for the medical team to come over and help out his teammate amid the celebrations.
Following that treatment, Henderson eventually left the pitch on a stretcher, being given oxygen as he departed.
He was taken to hospital due to his injuries and will not travel back to Kansas City with the rest of the squad.
He will stay back in Mexico City with a member of the England medical staff.
‘It looks really bad’
After an initial confusion over why medics were helping out an England star on the pitch, Harry Kane cleared things up.
He said post-match without any extra information: “Hendo just fell over there, I think he’s okay. Something to do with his arm.”
And then Jude Bellingham, who scored two goals against Mexico at the Azteca, gave a little bit more insight.
The Real Madrid superstar revealed: “He’s in a bit of bother, but our medical team have got it under control….
“Everyone was there to support him and even that was something beautiful to see.”
But Tuchel then gave a worrying reality check, telling the talkSPORT: “Then we have an injury now at the end of the match with Jordan Henderson, who needs to go to hospital and has a wrist injury that is quite serious.
“So I’m sad and concerned about that.”
A strange end to a special World Cup match
Henderson’s injury has put a slight negative note on what was one of the best World Cup matches we’ve ever seen.
England held on to beat co-hosts Mexico 3-2 at the Azteca, despite having only 10 men in the final stages of the game.
Bellingham scored two in the first half, with Kane netting a penalty which turned out to be the winning goal.
The Three Lions are now into the World Cup quarter-finals, where they will face Norway on Saturday, July 11.
Henderson will hope that he’s fit to feature in that clash.
But if the first signs are anything to go by, then he won’t be playing for England in the tournament anytime soon.
