Jesse Lingard is officially off the mark for Corinthians.
The former Manchester United star bagged his first goal since joining the Brazilian outfit as they beat Barra 1-0 in the first leg of their Copa do Brasil fifth round tie.
Lingard struck just before half time with a sweetly-struck volley inside Barra’s 18-yard box.
Aside from being his first goal for Corinthians, the 33-year-old has made Brazilian football history.
Lingard goes into the record books
Lingard now holds the honour of being the first and only Englishman to have scored in the Copa do Brasil.
Granted, Brazil has not been a footballing destination for many English players over the years.
Seth Burkett has the distinction of being the first Englishman to play professionally in Brazil, but his journey lasted all of 15 minutes.
It was then former Norwich City and Newcastle left-back Jamal Lewis’ turn to make history as he became the first British player to represent Sao Paulo when he joined them in September 2024.
However, the move lasted just a handful of months as he returned to Newcastle in January 2025 after sustaining an ankle injury.
Lingard is now the next man to brave the Brazilian frontier and already has seven appearances for Corinthians under his belt.
Luckily for the 33-year-old, there was a familiar face ready to greet him at Corinthians when he joined.
Memphis Depay played alongside Lingard at United, with the duo sharing the pitch 22 times for the Red Devils.
The Dutch ace arrived at the Brazilian side in September 2024 from Atletico Madrid and has already won three trophies since joining.
Lingard’s career at a glance
As for Lingard, the move to Corinthians represents the third stop in his career after he left United in June 2022.
Following his release from the Red Devils, Lingard was heavily tipped to re-join West Ham, where he enjoyed a successful stint on loan in the 2020/21 season.
Lingard netted nine times in 16 Premier League appearances for the Hammers as they ended the season in 6th.
Despite West Ham’s efforts to sign him permanently a year later, Lingard opted to join Nottingham Forest in July 2022 on a one-year deal.
However, it was a largely uneventful stint as Lingard departed without scoring a league goal for Forest.
Lingard remained a free agent for eight months before he joined FC Seoul.
Lingard chalked up 67 appearances in total for the Korean side but elected to call it quits in December after two years with the club.
