Liverpool have been told to consider bringing James Milner in as a coach following his retirement.
Milner called time on his 24-year Premier League career on Monday.
The 40-year-old played for six teams in the English top flight and broke the record for most Premier League appearances in February.
His career started at Leeds before going on to play for Newcastle and Aston Villa.
Milner then won two Premier League titles at Man City and one at Liverpool before ending his career at Brighton.
The 61-cap England international has played under some of the best coaches in world football.
Rangers legend and talkSPORT host Ally McCoist thinks he’d be a valuable asset in the Liverpool dressing room.
The Reds are closing in on appointing Andoni Iraola as their man to replace Arne Slot.
A number of Slot’s backroom staff have left the club following the Dutchman’s exit.
When the idea of Milner as a Liverpool coach was put to him, McCoist said: “I don’t think it’ll be a good idea. I think it’ll be a brilliant idea.Â
“You get guys that come through the game that are just class operators and I include Jordan Henderson in that too.
“Guys that hang about for a long long time and and and the key to their success is obviously talent and an ability to graft and work hard and appreciate their job.Â
“But also to pass on if you’ve got talent like that and an experience like that. You don’t want to waste that yet.
“You can’t buy what Milner and Henderson and boys like that have. They’ve played it. You can talk about levels of performance and this and that and the next thing. But the fact of the matter is they’re where they are for a reason and it’s their attitude to work.
“Be where they are and appreciate their surroundings. If you’ve got somebody like Milner who’s just retired and effectively anybody, and I don’t know James Milner, but anybody that you speak to or you read about that has played with him or been involved with him or coached him or manager has nothing but good things to say.Â
“So why would you not have somebody like that about your dressing room?”
What did Milner say?
The 40-year-old has not revealed what is next for him after making his 658th and final Premier League appearance on the last day of the 2025/26 season.
He wrote on social media: “After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career.Â
“From making my debut for Leeds, who I supported growing up, at the age of 16 and becoming the Premier League’s youngest scorer, I could never have dreamed of the journey I’ve been on, right through to not being able to lift my foot last year and then coming back to be part of Brighton qualifying for Europe for the second time in their history at the age of 40.
“To have gone on to represent Newcastle, Aston Villa, Man City, Liverpool and Brighton — and not forgetting a memorable month at Swindon Town — has been an incredible privilege.Â
“Every club has played a huge role in my life and career, and I want to thank everyone involved — the owners, staff, coaches, teammates and supporters who welcomed me and helped me along the way.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country England, at two European Championships and two World Cups. But more than anything, it’s the people and friendships I’ve made throughout the game that I’ll cherish forever.
“To the fans, thank you. To those who supported me every step of the way, your encouragement meant more than you’ll ever know. And to those who gave me grief along the way, thank you too — you all played your part in making the journey memorable and helping shape me as a player and person.
“To my family, thank you for every sacrifice, every mile travelled and every moment of encouragement. None of this would have been possible without you.
“I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Football has given me far more than I could ever have imagined, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities it provided.
“Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey.”
