In the end, was it really worth it?
Game 1 of the NBA Finals might have ended badly for Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, but for a fan who invaded the court, it got even worse.
An eagerly anticipated opening game of the 2026 Finals made more headlines for controversy involving the fans, rather than Jalen Brunson’s inspiration 30-point haul in a 101-95 victory at Frost Bank Center.
During the fourth quarter, when the Knicks seemed to have created a turnover from a Wembanyama pass, play was stopped for almost two minutes as a fan ran onto the court.
With a little under 6:30 remaining in the game the fan made his way towards the players and was remarkably unchallenged until he got close enough to French phenom Wemby, where he then took a selfie with the Spurs star and reigning Defensive Player of the Year.
Pictures and footage have emerged from the individual, including the image he took, which features the body – but no headshot of Wembanyama.
He was eventually grabbed by security and removed from the court, and consequences have quickly followed – while he also appears to have missed on getting the image he wanted.
“The individual who entered the court area during Game 1 of The Finals was arrested and will be banned for life from all NBA arenas,” an NBA statement read on Thursday afternoon.
“A second individual will also receive a lifetime ban for his role in the incident.”
It wasn’t the only moment of controversy in Texas, with the NBA also confirming they will investigate the behaviour of two fans courtside who are alleged to have abused Knicks star Brunson.
NBA insider Chris Haynes reports that ‘vulgar and profane comments’ were made to Brunson, who spoke to the game officials afterward but ultimately had the last laugh.
“Jalen, he was the MVP in the second half. He was huge for us,” Knicks coach Mike Brown said.
“He did what MVP candidates are supposed to do. He carried us home. We put the ball in his hands, and he got it done for us down the stretch.”
Game 2 takes place in San Antonio on Friday night as the Spurs look to level the series against a red hot New York.
The Knicks are now riding an astonishing 11-game win streak in the post season, having come from 2-1 down against Atlanta in the first round to win 4-2.
They backed that up by sweeping the Philadelphia 76ers in the semifinals, and then repeated the 4-0 whitewash over the Cleveland Cavaliers to win their first Eastern Conference title since 1999.
Things have been a little tougher for the Spurs, as the young Western Conference champions have battled through a gruelling seven game series against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
There are no excuses from Wembanyama who is vowing to bounce back.
NBA’s Greatest
“It’s the same: Every team guards differently,” he said after the defeat.
“I’m going to figure it out. I was bad tonight. It’s not more complicated than that.”
After Friday night the series switches to New York, where an hysterical Big Apple crowd have already flooded the streets through the post season.
The Knicks are chasing a first title since 1973, their second title while it has been 12 years since the Spurs won the fifth of their championships.
