Merab Dvalishvili is backing training partner Gina Carano to cause an upset when she takes on Ronda Rousey.
Dvalishvili has been working with the women’s fighting trailblazer at Syndicate MMA ahead of the huge Netflix show on May 16, promoted by Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions.
Carano is quite the underdog for the main event, having not fought competitively in the sport since 2009 – seven years before Rousey contested her final UFC bout.
But former UFC champion Dvalishvili, who is currently waiting to reclaim the bantamweight title from Petr Yan, believes he’s seen enough from the 44-year-old to think she will win.
Dvalishvili: Carano will beat Rousey
“It was a great honour for me to train with her and I was surprised at how good she is,” Dvalishvili said on The Ariel Helwani Show this week.
“Ronda Rousey has a judo background. I also have a judo background.
“But I think Gina Carano will win this fight, with how good she is.
“Because when she was fighting, I was very young and I was not even in MMA. I had never seen her fight before.
“But when I was training with her, I was so impressed, so I went and watched everything, I checked out all her fights and she’s the real deal, and I think she can beat Ronda.”
Dvalishvili continued: “It’s gonna make UFC fighters look bad, and she’s gonna make judo also look bad, but I think she’s going to win.
“She’s trained really hard. I’m impressed.
“I saw her one year ago at Syndicate. She was training by herself.
“And then I see the change, her body and training have changed, everything, and she’s really training at a high level. And I think she’s gonna deliver.”
Carano must pass extra tests to fight Rousey
Carano’s last MMA fight came under the Strikeforce banner in August 2009 when she suffered the only defeat of her career to Cris Cyborg.
The Texas native retired from the sport with a 7-1 record before appearing on the big screens, starring in films and TV series like The Mandalorian, Deadpool and Fast & Furious 6.
Both she and Rousey have to pass extensive medical tests to be cleared for their fight, which is set to be contested over five five-minute rounds.
The Netflix card also features the return of Francis Ngannou, while Nate Diaz faces Mike Perry in an early Fight of the Night contender.
Elsewhere, exciting, young talents including former KSW double champion Salahdine Parnasse and ex-UFC star Muhammad Mokaev both feature in respective bouts.
