Euphoric New York Knicks fans flooded city streets on Saturday night as they celebrated their first NBA championship in 53 years.
With a dramatic 94-90 win over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5, the Knicks clinched the best-of-seven Finals series 4-1 at Frost Bank Center, San Antonio.
Jalen Brunson orchestrated yet another famous comeback in a series littered with drama to secure New York’s third NBA title, and their first since 1973.
The unanimous Finals MVP put up an incredible 45 points on the road, including 15 in the final quarter, as the Knicks came back from 16 down to win.
Back home, as the buzzer sounded, New Yorkers took to the streets to party long into the night.
Knicks fans take over New York in wild celebrations
Crowds of jubilant fans descended into intersections and climbed light poles and buses, with videos on social media capturing the scenes from every angle.
Around 3,000 had gathered at a packed watch party outside Madison Square Garden, home of the Knicks, while others took to the streets of Times Square and across five boroughs to witness a legendary moment for the city.
CNN reported that as of early Sunday, multiple arrests had been made amid the celebrations, with footage online appearing to show a World Cup shuttle bus set alight.
A teenager also suffered a gunshot wound in Midtown Manhattan amid the chaotic scenes, as other revellers set off fireworks and fired smoke grenades after spilling out of packed bars and other venues.
Police later fenced off some streets and after holding back for about two hours, and officers in riot gear moved in to chase fans, Reuters reported.
Some police on horseback were seen pushing crowds back, clearing the streets around the Garden.
“Oh my God. It’s like New Year’s Eve times twenty,” an eye witness said of the celebrations.
Nearly 2,000 miles away in San Antonio, where the Knicks secured their historic victory, a very familiar face joined the locker room celebrations.
Timothee Chalamet joins Knicks for NBA title celebrations
Hollywood actor Timothee Chalamet, who has been a regular courtside throughout New York’s playoff run alongside various other celebrities, was in the building for Game 5.
The born and raised New Yorker was first seen celebrating the win on the court, and soon landed himself an invite to the locker room.
“Way rather this than the Oscars! Come on baby,” he told SportsCenter amid the madness.
Chalamet was pulled in for a hug by Brunson as he walked through the locker room door, and quipped about needing a ‘stunt double’ as he was soaked in champagne.
“O’m not an athlete, usually i have a stunt double to do that,” he joked, wiping the sparkling wine from his stinging eyes as he held a gold WWE Championship belt.
Ben Stiller was also seen revelling in the locker room celebrations, which no doubt stretched long into the night.
The triumphant Knicks will soon return to New York with the Larry O’Brien Trophy, and a championship parade has already been announced by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
“Parade. Thursday. Manhattan,” he posted on X.
New York will have just a few days to recover before thousands of Knicks fans flood the streets once again.
Some, no doubt, will continue to celebrate all through the week before parade day arrives.
